HAIFA DECISION POSTPONED UNTIL MONDAY

Paul Rogers 11 August 2006

UEFA today informed Liverpool Football Club that the decision on the away venue of the 3rd Qualifying Round of the Champions League has been postponed and will not be released until Monday 14th August.

Liverpool won the first leg against Maccabi Haifa 2-1 thanks to goals from Craig Bellamy and Mark Gonzalez but with the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, UEFA have ruled that the return leg can not be played in Israel.

As soon as UEFA announce the new venue, we'll bring you the news on liverpoolfc.tv.

How long do they want to leave it? Til the morning of the match!

From a Red in Cyprus on RAWK about 30 minutes back:

"While the Cyprus Football Federation ok'd the game to be played in Cyprus (after Maccabi's request) but the Cyprus Police have said that they cannot police the game so it won't be played here. It's all over the sport news and radios in Cyprus."

Israeli FA is complaining, insisting on Haifa.

Pennant and Gonzalez are reluctant to travel, given how close they'll be to red crosses.

Although it's only next week, the ceasefire should make the whole place that much safer. The "home team"/FA have a right to complain IMO - in which case it could get interesting...

Noone can seriously claim a place is safe only a few days after a cease-fire has been arranged.

It's not like the issues have been resolved or anything. Israel was ramping up it's ground troops on the day it was agreed! I expect the ceasefire to be broken by the weekend with both sides claiming the other one broke it first.

As far as UEFA are concerned. People have booked flights / accomodation now. They've annouced it and there is no way they can change it this late.
