from competing in international competition, does this extend to club sides in the Champions League?

because if it does, we might not have to play a qualifier, as we are the highest ranked team in the 3rd qualifying round, and that should mean us straight into the group stage

Next highest ranked country gets an automatic qualifying spot if they don't already have one I believe, and that is Turkey I think.

Inter are ahead of us on uefa CL ranking

How can that be possible?

You'll be telling me the USA are ranked higher than Italy next!

When two Greek teams miss out - one in the group stage and one in the 3rd qualifying stage UEFA - have to move teams from the 3rd qualifying directly into the group stage. The draws for the 1st and 2nd qualifying round have already been made. 14 teams from the 2nd qualifying round will enter the 3rd qualifying round.

UEFA will give 3 teams entrance for the CL groupstage: Galatasaray, Slovan Liberec and CSKA Moscow. This will leave 28 teams in CL QR3.

The Echo ran something on this the other week.

Euro Lift for Reds

LIVERPOOL could be handed a place in the Champions League proper this season -without the need to play a qualifying tie - after FIFA suspended all Greek teams from international competition.

Olympiakos were originally in the draw for the group stages of the Champions League - to be made on August 24.

But yesterday's announcement has frozen the involvement of all Greek clubs in European competition, and put England's friendly against Greece on August 16 under threat.

If the suspension is prolonged, Liverpool are the highest ranked team in the third qualifying round and an option for UEFA could be to promote the Reds.

A UEFA spokesman said today: "We are still waiting for more detailed submissions from FIFA before we make any comment."

But Greek football chiefs reacted with shock at the decision made because of continued government interference in Greek FA's activities.

"The reaction here at the federation is one of shock and surprise at the news," Greek FA press spokesman Michalis Tsapidis said. "It is something that was not expected.

"FIFA's ruling deals specifically with the independence of the national federation but it is a very complicated issue.

"We, of course, hope fora quickand favourable solution to this problem for the good of Greek football."

The Greeks now faces a race against time to persuade FIFA they can put their house in order.

But won't Inter be named Italian champs and therefore qualify automatically?

if you are joking or not I dont know, but that is exactly what is going to happen.

this is all very confusing alright but I hope we dont get the automatic qualiying place... we would then have to take the greeks teams ranking place... we'd end up being placed in a very hard group... i think

whats the craic then with the final. isnt it in Greece?

they'll just have to cancel the final then... I believe the official method to decide the winner is for the 2 teams to make funny faces at eachother until someone dies. the dying mans team then wins.

yes, i know that :bleh: , but if the Greeks cant participate in UEFA competition, wont that be a bit stupid having the showpiece game of the season in Greece?

It?ll avoid any claims of bias through a local team reaching the final.

Either the Greek FA would want to please FIFA and show how good they are by staging it, or they might refuse to do it (If they are still banned that is) as a protest.

I still say there's more chance the final will be in Athens than Wembley :P

the greek FA will need as much income as possible so they'll still hold it if they can... Wouldn't be suprised if they had it taken off them though.... if i were in charge id take their european trophy off them, elect ireland as the winners and relegate greece to serie C

Nope. Regardless of how a side reaches the Group Stage, once there the ranking of the side is determined by the Coefficients. We are at present Ranked 7th (I Think) so we will be in the Top Group of Rankings, regardless of how we make the Group Stage.

Having said all that, I cant see the Greeks not correcting this situation before the End of the Month. They just have too much to loose

Typical rubbish reporting from Prentice who gets both our ranking wrong and knows nothing about the procedure should the Greek teams remain suspended. Galatsaray wouold get the place. If the Italian clusb get relegated they'll be replaced by other Italian clubs.

Exactly - bitter blue in 'doesn't get it' shocker.

Anyway, on the greek front - the situation should be resolved either this week or next as the Greek Government is rushing through an amendment to keep FIFA happy (it also contravened certain sections of the EU Employment and Sports regs, so this time at least, Blatter got it right).

del Nido at Sevilla CF seems to be very pleased with himself over this and is stating to all and sundry that Sevilla CF will get a place
