Guest scratch Posted June 19, 2006 Posted June 19, 2006 Today it has emerged that Liverpool lead the race in securing the services of Argentinian Javier Saviola. Saviola who is very much out of favour at Barcelona after spending the last 2 seasons out on loan at Monaco and Sevilla respectively, is desperate for a permanent move away from the Nou Camp. Barcelona have also recently stated that, no matter how well Saviola plays at the World Cup, he will not play for Barca again. After the signing of Eidur Gudjohnsen for £8.2m, it seems clear Saviola is surplus to requirements and does not feature in Frank Rijkaard's plans. The sports director of Barcelona had this to say, "The goals of Saviola will not change our decision," "We have no intention to have the player return to us. "Our objective now is to search for a club where he could get more minutes." This has now alerted many Clubs around Europe with the Premiership seeming his most likely destination after many unhappy spells in La Liga. And the five time European Champions are thought to be very much in the hunt for Saviola?s signature, after letting Fernando Morientes depart. Also, with the likelihood of Djibril Cisse moving to Marseille on loan, Liverpool?s number upfront will be thin. Craig Bellamy is also believed to be wanted by Liverpool, and it now appears that Rafa Benitez will be focusing on landing either Bellamy or Saviola before the season starts in August. ************************************************************************************* No quotes from Liverpool, just idle specualtion i believe, but I certainly wouldn't object to him coming to us. fyds Posted June 19, 2006 Posted June 19, 2006 Window nearly open, so expect a lot more of this - it will get harder to tell what's possible or probable from what's a non-starter or just nuts. Within a couple of weeks, the words 'Benitez' and 'War chest' will be seen in frequent close proximity along with terms such as 'are believed to' and 'reports indicate'. Same for everyone,
Tetti Posted June 19, 2006 Posted June 19, 2006 Good with his hands too as I remember ( Worked out alright in the end though )
melia Posted June 19, 2006 Posted June 19, 2006 I was really impressed by him the other day. Thought he was the vital ingredient in Argentina's first couple of goals.

Leo No.8 Posted June 19, 2006 Posted June 19, 2006 Wondeful talent, but hasn't been a great success in Spain and may not take to the game in England - depends on how much really. I'd like to see Bellamy at Anfield, but I'd also be very excited to see Saviola here if we're looking at a similar price. It'd be one or the other to fit that 'pacy, skilful forward' vacancy we currently have; I think Saviola could potentially offer more if it clicked for him but Bellamy is Premiership proven. All depends on the price, but I'd take either in all honesty.
fyds Posted June 19, 2006 Posted June 19, 2006 (edited) you forgot "Swoop" You're right, dammit! I also forgot 'a source close to' 'an Anfiled insider', 'search for investment' 'must sell to buy', 'Gerrard to Chelsea/Barca/MilanMadrid to help fund Rafalution' and 'Liverpool defenders buy Marc Almond CD' Edited June 19, 2006 by fyds

Guest scratch Posted June 19, 2006 Posted June 19, 2006 window opened on June 1st no? Window opened on the last day of the season, 3 days before the CL Final took place. However, as a lot of transfers occur on July 1st (as that's when previous contracts expire) it leads to easy confusion.
chiliking Posted June 19, 2006 Posted June 19, 2006 I me myself rate Saviola and Bellamy equally, I'll be ahppy with either of them.
RafaShanks Posted June 19, 2006 Posted June 19, 2006 Can't see it happening with Bellamy signing. A target man will be next on Rafa's list.

The mad dash in the prem won't really get under way until the end of this month when contracts expire, as you say.

RafaShanks Posted June 19, 2006 Posted June 19, 2006 Thought we had one We do, but I can't Rafa going for two "horizonitally challenged" strikers. Someone like Kuyt would compliment Bellamy and our existing strikers.
Guest Cally77 Posted June 19, 2006 Posted June 19, 2006 I'm not sure Bellamy and Saviola are similar players. Bellamy is more of an out-and-out striker, looking to get in behind the defence. Saviola strikes me as someone who plays a bit deeper, between the lines, a position I feel we can do much better in. There would be room for both, imo.
jimmylibel Posted June 19, 2006 Posted June 19, 2006 Saviola is an alternative to Aimar but faster. Don't really agree with that - Saviola plays slightly further up the field and is more comfortable in wider positions... Aimar does all his work through the centre.
Guest Bernie Posted June 19, 2006 Posted June 19, 2006 Well, with the official bid going in for Bellamy, I don't see this one going very far. Kuyt, Bellamy, Crouch and Fowler, with Garcia and Kewell providing other options would leave us in a good position going into pre-season.
genghis Posted June 19, 2006 Posted June 19, 2006 Saviola is an alternative to Aimar but faster. sorry mate, can't agree with that. saviola has 'will make Smicer look like Souness' written all over him, whereas Aimar actually is a tough little b*stard. I think Javier is destined to look good in a less physical league. File under "Riquelme".
fyds Posted June 19, 2006 Posted June 19, 2006 Ah - but has he "issued a come and get me plea" yetAh, the transfer window clichés are coming thick and fast now!
Figaro Posted June 19, 2006 Posted June 19, 2006 Saviola is the Argentinian version of me: Disappears when you really need him.
