...the first time we ever won it in 1965? The lad on the left must be Ron Yeats? Who's the other 2-3 lads?

Anyone here who's actually old enough to remember this?

Never forgotten the Saint's winner, watching as a kid on the s***ty tellys we had then, cross comes over but its behind him, somehow he seems to dive backwards , get his head behind the ball and after 73 years (or whatever!) of trying we've finally won the b*****d cup and stopped the bluenoses going on about how we couldn't win it.

Most of my family (all on me dad's side) were of Irish Catholic origin and, in those days, a lot of left-footers thought the s**** were their team so I had all my aunties(who knew f***-all about football!) becoming twice a year bluenoses (and I had a lot of aunties (good catholic family) so the relief was as great as the joy!

Sorry -rambling!

Altogether now,

"The Queen's wearing red*.

The Queen's wearing red*

Ee-aye-addio

The Queen's wearing red* !!"

*Or a mid-tone of battleship grey for all those watching at home

Was watching that in Glorious black and white in Alder Hey Hospital. About a week later the team (you didn't really have squads back then) came round the wards with the cup.

I had the pleasure of meeting the saint at manchester airport, and had a bevvy with him, he said winning the cup for the first time was amazing, and the homecoming was something to behold, each player was given a 50 quid bonus :o for winning the cup, and the best of it no one was expecting it.Now some players are asking how much they get before they play in a final, espescially the international teams.

'Ee-aye-adio we won the Cup!' .....remember that was on the front of The Echo FA Cup Special

Also, I'm sure there were a couple of 'Yeah, Yeah!,s' in there as well - Beatle-ese doncha know! :D

Kept that paper for years, til it literally fell apart with age.

Aye, and thats the forehead of Peter Thompson at the front of the pic above

When we won there was also a big chorus (as there was ion the homecoming) of 'We love you, yeah, yeah yeah!' Beatle-ese indeed! The following year of course (1966) it changed to 'We all live in a red and White Kop'

Looks like Peter Thompson sitting in front of them, possibly with Tommy Lawrence sitting to his right

Always thought that was the greatest day in Reds history, until 25th May last year.

It was the first time I'd ever been to Wembley and one of my most memorable experiences following the reds.It will seem strange to today's generation but lifting the FA cup was as big a thrill at the time as regaining the league championship will appear to many fans today.Liverpool had never won the cup previously-it was the glamour competition- and it was like lifting a millstone of our necks. The homecoming was pretty special too-unmatched until the return from Istanbul last year.

That '65 win was made even more special to me due to the semi defeat to Leicester in '63. I can still see the press photo of the Saint in tears at the end of the game with Banks and Stringfellow behind him. Looked as though they were laughing at him or maybe my 9 year old mind was looking at it too deeply. I hated Leicester for that but I still wanted them to win the final!

Oh, that clip brings a shudder of returning memory flashing down the spinal cortex! The mix of Beatles and Tony Curtis, square-neck and brylcreemed haircuts, people pissing where they stood as the bogs were but a distant dream 'Watch out la, I need a burst!', the air filled with the aroma of wet overcoats and stale Woodies, cups of tea, bovril - people with flasks (what a good idea they thought) who despite their best efforts couldn't actually retrieve them from their pockets because of the tightly packed crowd.

Then there was the mad rush forward which you were part of as you had no choice when we attacked or scored. I swear there were many kopites who had been going for years who only ever actually saw us score a goal if it was at the Anny Road end, because they were pushed beyond line of sight in the crowd 'Did it go in? Who Scored?' was not an uncommon refrain.

The grounds are safer now, without any doubt whatsoever - but oh, we lost something when the standing Kop went. I used to have a regular spot (as did so many) not far from where that reporter was standing, between the corner flag and the keepers left hand post down near the front. I was a skinny kid - I didn't have the nuts to stand full in the middle for years.

Wow. Some great posts here like FYDS's. Wonderful memories from the very dawn of modern football fandom. As one of the earlier posters said it's now impossible even for those who went through it all to recall just how uniquely magical the FA Cup win felt to LFC fans. It was like as if we would never have to do anything else ever again after Rowdy lifted it...then 4 days later came Inter Milan.
