Yeah Diaz has been a bit unlucky with the age he came to us. Usually he gets a new bumper contract after a couple of years. Unfortunately for him, he was 25 and signed a 5 year deal when he joined and the window that he would have usually been given a new contract was last summer, after 2 seasons. That would have taken him to age 32 and with last summer as we all know was stuffed for contract renewals, leaving him with 2 years left on relatively low wages and 28 years old.
We could give him a 4 year deal now but if we're looking to shift him (or think that he's looking to shift himself) there's no point doing that as that wage will just eat into any transfer fee.
Given that his agent will want to argue that his extension should really cover the lost year too, it's a tough deal to do unless he and us are fully committed to him playing here until he's 32/33. Otherwise it's better to sell him this window/season or next, or even let him stay until the end of 26/27 given that whoever we replace him with will probably want at least another £100kpw and maybe more.
