I think a new forward would do us best and bring Gerrard back in midfield. I think Gerrard in a way is the best one to replace Alonso and to have a world class forward with Torres would make us much better than trying to bring in a new midfielder imo.
Am I the only one that finds the fee for Aquilani mentioned in the press (15-18 million) a bit too high? Hasn't he been injured a lot the last three seasons? This is close to be the same fee we refused to pay for Barry last season. Could it be that Roma own us from the Riise transfer and we are doing a transfer like we did with Johnson?
I dont think we will get a direct replacement for Xabi. Gerrard might drop back, at least in the homegames and we might play Babel/Yossi behind Torres. Sissoko and Mascherano would do a good job away from home and in the CL with Gerrard and Torres upfront.
It's looks like we have difficulties in closing deals. Who is responsible? Is it Rafa or Parry? If Rafa wants to replace Alonso with Barry - and we have a buyer for Alonso and Barry wants to join - why has this not been finalised?? Rafa came out in May and said he wanted deals to be closed early this year. According to Echo Juventus is loosing interest and we are not getting Barry!!! It is very frustrating. And if Milner or Bentley are coming for Pennant I can't see there is much improvement. Sorry to say.
Patrice Bergues was the 1st team coach - Phil Thompson was No. 2 (assistant manager). But I think that the departure of Pako could be the reason for our slump.
I'm just saying that both teams have brought in better players than we have. Not saying anything else than that. I was not predicting what would happen.
I think tonights game is the first we can really make any judgement on the new signings. Vorinin has impressed and Torres has shown glimpses of class. I'm a bit worried on Yossi and Babel. I'm not sure they have improved our team enough for the coming season. Leto looked fine in the last game. But as I said it is tonights game where we are against a good team and our form should be good. But from what I have seen so far, and I have seen most of the pre-season games, I think that only Torres will be in the team week in and week out.
Reina Finnan Carragher Agger Riise Gerrard Alonso Mascherano Kewell Torres Kuyt Subs: Carson, Arbeloa, Crouch, Babel, Sissoko I think that Mascherano is a key player for Rafa and he will defenitely start.
I hope this is true. I'm not english but I've always supported England in the WC and European Cup... but I have to say that when a team does not include a player like Carra it does not deserve winning anything.
Just watching the Treble video from 2000-2001 season. I wonder how anyone can actually come to the conclusion that we don't need Owen. The boy is brilliant! Scores with his left foot and alot of headers. Played 46 games that season and scored 24 goals. He will without a doubt be the best striker in the Prem.
