  1. Funny thing is, you grow up with it, then it's normal. Liverpool always had a thriving Chinese section ( a friend from back then who was of Chinese origin became an actor and had to 'lose' his scouse accent), always had plenty of African/West indian origin - we were all scousers. I don't remember hearing 'patois' type accents etc until I moved away, just scouse ones. What seemd strange for you being from the south was normal to me. You're not the only though...there have been plenty of others who've commented on that over the years.
  2. There's something in there that a whole generation on here won't know the fun of - just pitching up and paying at the turnstiles - no tickets, no fan cards...how wonderful was that? I'm desperately trying to remember the cost of going in my favourite bit of the Kop in the sixties - the price was painted above the entry...but my brain just won't pick out the details it was just a few bob though, I'm sure. Afterwards, me and my mate Jimmy Dunne would walk down to the Chinese Chippy on Walton Breck Road, get chips and a fishcake (about all we could afford), then either walk to Kirkdale Road to get the 544 or 44D or to Breck Road to get the 15D back to Kirkby (10d in old money when the buses still had conductors and everyone was fagging it with woodies and Parky roughs on the top deck). Alternatively, we might have gone round to see my Auntie Elsie on Canon Road (just off Townsend Lane - but only if we were skint as she couldn't cook for nuts. I remember her son 'Young Alfie' always used to call me 'Blue' because I was the only member of the family with blue eyes. Jebus - that's got the nostalgia gland going again...
  3. Didn't see the game you refer to, but remember the other details about him finishing his BSc and being capped before being a full pro. As we're pretty much contemporaries, the first game I can clearlyremember attending was the Liverpool v Arsenal League game at Anfield, we won, a dog ran on the pitch (fielded by Bob Paisley i think) and it was the first ever MOTD, August, 1964 - we won. I've been told I went to as many as four or fibe games the previous season but i can't recall them - well, maybe one in what would have been about February, when it snowed like mad and I remember Cally scoring and Gerry Byrne doing a tackle that saw him slide for about 20 yards like a snow plough. Another thread for another day would be who can remember who's debut - Emlyn Hughes, Ray Clemence, Tony Hateley, Alun Evans, Kevin Keegan, Ray kennedy, are all ones I remember (not all were good) I remember Jocky had a terrible first game.

    Phil Neal

Think you're missing the point Steve - you can be a great footballer (and he was) and still be a complete tw*t off the pitch. Emlyn, St John, Heighway, MaManaman, Tommy Smith - all anfield legends on the pitch in different eras, all more than capable of being complete c*nts off it at anytime. Don't confuse what someone does/did with who they are. The role mentioned was 'Figurehead' - maybe he could do thatas an Anfield 'legend; - but he'll still need to brush up on his people skills. I wonder if we could get Stevie Nicol back from the US? Dalglish would be the perfect figurehead - but could he do things Rafa's way? In truth - many footballers simply are not smart enough.
