  6. I think Gerrard and Alonso together is probably the best of the possible central midfield pairings we could have against lesser opposition. I thought they struggled a bit yesterday, but part of that was due to playing against a 5 man Bolton midfield. I would also say that - given the lack of a proper right winger - the Alonso/Sissoko pairing with Gerrard on the right is probably the strongest overall midfield we can put out at the moment. The impact that Sissoko has had is that we are not really missing Gerrard in the middle of the park. I can give Sissoko no greater compliment than that! As shown (graphically) in the first half of last seasons champions league final, Alonso/Gerrard is not the best midfield pairing against stronger opposition. We would do better with all three of Alonso/Gerrard/Sissoko in midfield and just the one striker, or possibly 352 (like the Juventus game last year). Edit for typos as usual

  8. Toshack/Keegan would do too. Have we been spoilt over the years or what! Didn't you just ask me that?

  10. I agree with Scot It happens (buying bad players) (and - just this once - agreeing with Scot)
  11. I'm still not sure I buy this whole 'players from weaker leagues are riskier' argument. Hyppia, Riise, Babbel - all signed after playing in 'weaker' leagues and all great. Henchoz, Hamann - signed from other English teams - great Ziege, Xavier - signed from other English teams - pants Cheyrou, Diao - signed after playing in weaker leagues - pants Then you've got some disappointments from other 'strong' leagues, such as Pellegrino, Morientes, Josemi. And there are quite a few players who have contributed without setting the world on fire, regardless of where they played before they came to us. I think it's actually more down to the player you sign then where he's been signed from. SIgN gOoD PlAYerZ

  14. I think England should switch to 352 and play both Gerrard and Lampard, with Carrick sweeping up behind. Ashley Cole and SWP as wing backs. This gives the immeasurable benefit of being able to drop both Neville AND Beckham...
  15. Yes he is. He's easily the best Hungarian player at the moment. I'd be happy if he arrived, if only because I live in Hungary! I also think he's a quality player who's been badly missed by his team this season, and if we're getting two right sided players in the summer I'd like him to be one of them.

  18. What's the maximum age for young player of the season? Momo has to be in with a shout...
  19. It's interesting to note that having not scored for his first 18 games he now has 10 goals in his last 23 appearances, which is a pretty good ratio.
  20. I think Agger is doing great. I believe that was his first start alongside Carra? At the age of 21? I'd like to see the Carragheragger combo given a run of games to build up a bit of understanding...
  21. If Shevchenko really is likely to leave for around 10 million then we should get a bid in. We can't match Chelsea's wages, but we have a lot of other things going for us (we're not Chelsea for starters...). We could at least force Chelsea to pay more (not that that makes much difference - maybe we should make a 'special deal' with AC Milan - we put in a bit for Shevchenko, they get more money and we get a cut of the extra )

    Momo

I was thinking exactly this earlier today. Momo has been missed. I think that with him out Gerrard has to play in the middle - otherwise we have no pace in the middle of the park. Arsenal were passing the ball round Alonso and Hamann yesterday.
  24. Part of the problem is that Crouch is playing next to a misfiring striker (whoever that may be, take your pick). We're playing much better possession football than we did last season, and for me a lot of that is down to Crouch being able to hold up the ball. We just need a proper goalscorer (or a choice of two) to play next to him. If Crouch was playing next to a regular goalscorer it would take the pressure of him to score and he'd probably relax a bit and score more. Just a pet theory of mine
  25. If we had decent strikers who were converting a quarter of the shots on target we've had (which is what our opponents have managed against us), we'd have scored 17 goals instead of 5. It's noticable that our shots on target percentage compared to total shots is also lower than our opponents as well. If we were 'as accurate' and 'as reliable' as our last ten opponents, we'd have scored 20 in the last 10 games, not 5.
