McMichael was a Newcastle stalwart during the 1950s and early 60s, making more than 400 appearances at left-back. He was a member of the team which beat Arsenal 1-0 in the 1952 FA Cup final and won 40 international caps while at the north-east club. McMichael was part of the Northern Ireland team which reached the World Cup quarter-finals in 1958. The full-back made 433 appearances for Newcastle, having moved there in 1949 from Irish League club Linfield. After his playing days, McMichael managed South Shields and his home town team of Bangor in County Down. He ended his working days at the Harland and Wolffe shipyard in Belfast.
