It was basically the same system though John, just the players changed. The emphasis didn't. I do think tactics are important - Martin O'Neill is probably the best motivator in the game but that's not going to make him a European Cup winner on it's own really is it.

NHE - while I don't disagree with any of the points you've made I do think it is important to take a step back think why there is such emphasis on making money. As you rightly point out we need to make more money to put good players on the pitch. And why do we need to have better players on the pitch? Because we want to be successful and win things. And why do we want to be successful and win things? To keep the fans happy. So really it's all our own fault.

No but he hasn't tried other ideas... he tries the one system and when that doesn't work plan B is hoof it to Huth. Plan A is very, very good as I said, but his other tactical plans are practically non-existant.

I disagree with that article, I don't think he does switch formations like Strachan makes out at all. He just switches players. And besides there is far more to 'tactics' than just formations. Mourinho has one very, very, very good system which works for him most of the time. I just don't think he's really capable of changing that around. I'm sure has probably experimented with other systems but it is revealing that when he back is against the wall he reverts to the Big Sam-esque tactic of putting an extra big man up front and hoofing it. That's a sign of a lack of ideas.

Graham Hunter was on the radio over here this morning and he was saying that he spoke to one of the Chelsea players and apparently Mourinho announced his team on Monday night to the squad, changed it the next morning and then changed it again in the afternoon. Wasn't exactly confidence inspiring or for that matter the usual practice of 'the special one'. Don't think he is tactically naive, but I do think his sides are tactically inflexible.

Xabi has never struck me as 'miserable', always comes across as the happy go lucky sort.

Very happy with how we've been playing all season, however that is why I'm a little disappointed with our league position. We should be doing better than 1 point clear of the Mancs having played two more games... we are clearly a better side this season and that should be reflected in the table.

Met Mick McCarthy a few times. Very nice man in person. Knew very little about football though. Personally I still haven't forgiven him for what happened during the World Cup... Kilbane and Harte down the left, I ask you.
