Stupid ball Moyes admitted that his side didn't exploit the specialised FA Cup ball as well as his opponents. The Umbro-manufactured ball, different to the one used in the Premiership, seemed to prove problematic for goalkeeper Tim Howard, as two long-range strikes from Morten Gamst Pedersen caused him problems for the first two goals. Blackburn manager Mark Hughes revealed that his players had worked on exploiting the "unpredictable" nature of the ball and Moyes said: "I spoke to a couple of people about how the ball was moving and I think that did contribute. "It was swerving about a bit and maybe it was something we didn't notice quite as much. "I think Tim should have saved the free-kick because I'm not convinced it was in the corner of the net."
