I hear what you're saying. But I think the Coutinho/Sturridge thing just sparked a bit of a transfer committee 'fad' of sorts of looking for forgotten gems. I'm happy to continue looking for such a player provided he brings results. However, I do think with European football you do need that one big name signing to show that you do mean business - as well as signing cheaper alternatives. For all his flaws this year, Aspas was seen as a good buy last year. Playing for a team at the bottom of the league with a good record and for the money we paid it was a good idea. Plus let's not forget players like him were realistic for us last year. Mkhitaryan et al proved that we were punching above our weight - fortunately that's no longer the case. Plus he's had a dreadful season by his own standards since moving to Germany. Blessing in disguise you might say?

With an educated judgement do you think we'll still be going for underrated gems like this again for the same price to really build the squad or do you think we'll still get at least one big marquee (But still effective) signing? I've seen Kovacic play a couple of times, but only on Serie A highlights and I've been impressed - Other than that i just know he was a wonder kid on FM 12 or something lol Saying that, if they turn out to be great then BR can sign all the 7-9 mil lads he wants.

Think the uber passionate ones will hate that post but I for one think it's spot on. We currently have Utd's age-old title winning luck from them, which in itself is encouraging, but you've made such a valid point.

Oh definitely, that's not what I'm saying please don't get me wrong. I just think it could happen is all. I didn't think we'd be so nervy this early on, was thinking closer to Chelsea. Nevertheless, onwards!

Just an observation - I don't think us playing Spurs, City and Chelsea at home is as much of an advantage as people think. I think tonight has shown that the fans (who were f***ing great btw) are making it nervy for them. We seem to have been playing a lot better on the road were the atmosphere isn't as intense. Hopefully I'm wrong, but just something I've picked up on.
