i don't think Rio has let England down playing for England in the major tournaments and can understand why the manager has stuck with him. Yes i think Carra is a better defender than Rio but if John Terry is a certain starter , which it looks like he is, then i think Rio's pace is important alongside him. Rio is still a good defender, despite the slaggin he gets on here. Our strikers couldn't get a goal against United with him in the team this season, although maybe that's not saying much. He also carries more of a goal threat than Carra - and we all know how important set pieces can be... Ultimately it's a matter of opinion for Sven. But it is a classic argument - 'i don't want Gerrard to play but am pissed of that Carra isn't getting picked'.

Stories today (and yes it may all be Mourinho bullschit) that Lampard is a major doubt for this Saturday's game and Barca next week.

it's not pointless for Sven or England though. as for injuries - yes that could happen but that could happen training with Liverpool too Lampard has got his injury training - that's Football.

The point of international friendlies is not to rest Liverpool players. It's plain as day what people want but back in the real World, the players want to play for England and the England manager wants to be able to play his best side, for what, i think at least, are fairly obvious reasons. The more pitch time these players have together before the World Cup the better. At the same time he wants to remain sensitive to the sensibilities of club managers. Playing Gerrard for 45 minutes strikes this balance.

soz - i'm not really trying to get into this 'match fitness' debate. For me - it's 45 minutes of a friendly, his manager would rather he rested - courses he does. Club managers would prefer there were no Internationl footy games at all, i imagine. I think he will be fine for Saturday as i don't believe 45 minutes in a friendly is gonna take that much out of him.

why didn't the Liverpool training staff assess him before the England squad gathered, the medical staff tell the manager he wasn't fit to play due to fatigue and pull him from the squad, if it really is that f***ing simple?
