City's tactics yesterday

anny road

They were told to press on Alonso and deniy him space to play, Barton and Sibierski were supposed to clamp him when we had the ball.....They reckoned that Riise is a defensive weakspot and he was to be targeted with diagonal balls to Samaras......They wanted to keep it quiet for the first half then push on if it was 0-0 to try and nick it...........

According to Ste the game plan went out of the window when Xabi went off, and Pearce was telling Barton to stick to Gerrard but he didnt do it well enough and has received a b******ing for that and the red card after..........They also didnt reckon for Kromkamp playing and Pearce had primed them up all week for Garcia to be playing.

They think we are the most physical side they have played, with all of our players being able to handle themselves, Pearce thinks this is where City lost it as the midfield were out muscled expecially Musampa and Riera...............

All the City players were talking up Crouch after

I hope they keep targetting him as we've still only conceded one league goal this season with Riise as leftback (Rio Ferdinand's header).

When there are no real weaknesses you have to find one!

Not sure about Musampa being out-muscled. He hardly got close enough to anyone in a red shirt to get out-muscled.. A more accurate analysis would be chasing shadows, or, more simply, he's sch1te.

The diagonal balls to Samaras did work quite well for them. In the air Riise doesn't lose many, but Samaras had the beating of him on the deck.

What was wrong with our defence yesterday?

Albeit the majority of the game we were strong, our ususal solid selves but how many times we easy passes out of the box f***ed up putting City in good positions?

I'm not sure if it was us shaken up a bit by their pace in the second half but we made several stupid mistakes and if we were playing a better side I fear we'd have conceeded at least one.

we made a couple of mistakes but this is OTT

think you're underselling pepe reina a bit there.

we were without our defensive lynchpin and leader and made a couple of mistakes in his absence. sami never looks comfortable at right centre-back anyway.

Thats it exactly.

If on one side of the pitch you have Finnan, and the other you have Riise, I imagine I'd rather attack Riise as well. Thats not because he's a bad player, he's not. I agree he's one of the best left backs in the league. But on the other side of the pitch is Steve Finnan, who is the best right back around.

Also with Gerrard playing at Right Wing for a while, I'd have attacked down the side with Kewell and Riise as well, simply because they're not Gerrard or Finnan.

It's not a case of teams attacking Riise because of who he is, its a case of them attacking down his side because of who he's not.

Exactly, that says so much about our other defenders if Riise is the alleged weak link. This news makes me happy. :D

I think Riise is a fantastic left back, if only he'd cut out the hoofs.
