I would love to see them all making the first team some time in the future and if Ramon Calliste makes it then seeing that he is an ex manc that would be extra special.

From the offal

Neil Mellor was back on the scoresheet in his first 90 minutes for a year as Liverpool cruised into the quarter-finals of the Liverpool Senior Cup after a 3-0 win over Runcorn.

The game was played at Prescot Cables Valerie Park and Mellor was making his first start since the Carling Cup semi-final against Watford at Anfield in January. He has had a personal nightmare 2005 after a double knee operation to cure tendonitis.

Mellor made his comeback as a substitute for the reserves in their 2-0 victory at Manchester United a fortnight ago and he came through 90 minutes here which will do the striker the world of good.

Mellor scored in the 88th minute of the game with a typical deadly finish drilled low into the bottom left corner of the net. The Reds had led 2-0 at half-time thanks to goals from Paul Anderson and Ramon Calliste.

Normally in the past few seasons Liverpool have fielded an Under-18 Academy side in the Liverpool Senior Cup but with the reserves not playing again until January 9th it was decided to play the reserve team with Paco Herrera and Hughie McAuley in charge.

Liverpool opened the scoring in the 26th minute with a superb goal from 17-year-old winger Paul Anderson. Taking Godwin Antwi's pass on the left wing Anderson beat two defenders before slotting the ball into the bottom corner of the net.

Within four minutes it was 2-0 as a defensive mistake from Runcorn saw Ramon Calliste take full advantage and found the net after the goalkeeper had collided with his own full back.

Liverpool: Willis, Barragan, Raven, Antwi, O'Donnell, Hobbs, Anderson, Peltier, Mellor, Mannix, Calliste (Idrizaj 45). Subs: Guthrie, Roberts, Smith, Roque.

You know, i actually think that Rafa rates Mellor, but i also think he that Rafa beleives that Mellor needs alot of work in a lot of areas too.

Its got a nice ring to it! ;)

Everytime I read a youth / reserve report Calliste seems to score - anyone seen him play?

mmmm not sure. I think that if Mellor hadnt' had his injury troubles, he'd have been gone by now, at least on loan. Also, I doubt Rafa would be that impressed with Neil's constant supply of puppy fat :D

As anyone seen much of Idrizaj?

Saw him on some of the offal reserve highlights. It's difficult to judge players from that alone (impossible, actually), but he did score a goal. I'm not sure, but it seems he likes to play up front. I was under the impression that he was an out and out winger, but it doesn't look like it.

looking at his goal scoring record it s difficult not to rate mellor...he scores just for fun for the reserves...having watched him play for the first team last season i must say he was not ready to make the grade...he needs to improve his overall game a lot...he seemed slow and short of the necessary technique...which makes it obvious that there is a huge leap from reserve team to PS football.

many a striker score for fun in the reserves, and can't make the grade.

He's 23 now, not a kid anymore, can't see him improving so much as to make it here. Nothing to say he can't be a decent striker elswhere.

It's funny that he's 23 now. Saw Carra on the offal talk about how he still considers Warnock to be one of the young players. And he's 24.

Would like to see him get a chance in the first team, though. I for one thought he looked fenomenal until his knees killed him.

He did have some intelligent runs off the ball, e.g. setting up Alonso by dragging Campbell on a diagonal run, and he had some important goals for us - Arsenal, Olympiacos.

Give the lad a run in the first team, and if he's not delivering, ship him out.

Mellor just isn't mobile enough for the Premier League. Its a shame as he has all the strikers instincts and finishing ability, but not the athletisism to make it count.

If you could put all of Mellor's abilites in terms of smart movement, finishing ability and reading of the game into the body of Cisse, you'd have a striker of Henry-esque quality.

However, as cloning and general meddling with genetics is largely untested in the Premier League, unfortunately one will go back to France before too long and the other should eventually ply his trade in a lower division.

As for Foy; some nice tricks, good attitude but just too small and ineffectual - not built for the Premier League like most of Heighway's graduates.

The next Ritchie Partridge is exactly what Foy will be...

Or you'd have an overweight, selfish striker with dyed hair and an awful first touch. ;)

I had thought so too and that was my main reason for asking. His first interview with the offal was encouraging, he seems to have a decent mentality and he realises where he is, which is important.
