Malaysian Plane 'crash' in Ukraine

Never mind the 522 missing/dead plus crews.

Don't be a dick. Of course the number of people dead is the major tragedy in both accidents. However for a company to lose two aircraft in a year in such sickening circumstances (possible pilot suicide, shot down) is very unusual and it must be a tough time for all those involved with the airline.

Not being a dick, and I fully understand the bit in bold, but the plight of the airline wouldn't be uppermost in my mind after a plane crashes.

how could a missile shoot down a plane 10k high up in the air?

Shells fired from warships in WWII could reach up to 40,000 feet.

I wouldn't doubt that, but sod the airline and writing about how they might feel. At least they're alive to feel at all.

True, though from a personal point of view as someone who works in the industry my thoughts do go out to those at Malaysian who have lost friends, colleagues. have to deal with the aftermath etc. It is never nice. Twice in a year is ridiculous.

Awful. Experts say it couldn't have been a handheld missile launcher... so either a huge truck-transported thing or from a fighter plane? Either way points at Putin.

You have to wonder wtf it was doing flying over a warzone? Surely this isn't a common thing for airlines to do?

Yes, true that.

This from the BBC News website...

Analysis: Jonathan Beale, BBC News

A defence expert has told the BBC that shooting down a plane at 10,000m (9.7 miles) would have required a long- range surface-to-air missile - possibly guided by radar.

That suggests it is unlikely it could have been downed by a portable air defence missile, or Manpad, which has a much shorter range.

The only other possibility is for an aircraft at that height to be downed by a fighter carrying air-to-air missiles.

The US will have access to satellite imagery that should be able to identify ultra-violet plumes if a long-range surface-to-air missile was fired.

If it was shot down, there're bound to be some serious repercussions.

Bloody awful for everyone involved/concerned.

This is horrible, crashing near the Ukraine and Russia border cannot be coincidence surely?

Tin foil hat wearers polishing their USA shot it down Facebook posts as we speak.

Flew from Copenhagen to Phuket in February and remember we flew right over Donetsk on the way over. Surely if it's a major flight path it should have been diverted away from there by now?

Believe a US official made a statement a few days ago about Russians providing separatists with surface-to-air missiles that can reach 20,000 feet.

Talk on most aviation forums is of it being shot down. Some also saying that a lot of surface to air missiles can reach 46,000ft. This plane was at 33,000ft. There is also a reported quote of a rebel leader claiming that it was his group who shot down the plane, thinking it was a Ukranian one.

@rjamesjones on Twitter:

On rebel commander Strelkov's page "We warned you not to fly in our sky." He

thought they'd shot a Ukrainian plane.
