What are people doing for pensions?

 

I'm meeting a pension expert next week and I have not got a clue what I should be doing.

 

I'm 38, no debt other than mortgage (which is fairly small), in my old job I paid in to a final salary scheme pension for about 5 years.

I'm now a self employed IT contractor.

 

Should I be looking at a normal pension? I'm worried about some of the horror stories you hear about firms going to the wall and the pension fund with them like Equitable Life.

Should I clear my mortgage first and/or look at alternatives to the traditional pension?
