Like him or loathe him, you've got to hand it to Stephen Hunt - as put downs go this is a belter...

 

 

 

'We’re not so much annoyed but they know what goes on. They have families, families watch games and stuff like that. Where do they get their kicks from? Do you know what I mean? Especially Dunphy, he should know better by now. He’s a skinny rat, a skinny, little rat.

There are a certain two or three people who say stuff and they just say it for the sake of saying it - to be the bad cop. What’s the point in that? To get a higher salary in the RTE or wherever they come from? It’s stupid.

 

'I’m talking about certain people who say it for the sake of it and it just doesn’t make sense. Why say it? To earn bigger money or to be the man? Silly rat.

 

'I just hear things, what goes on. You are paid to give a personal opinion on the game but at least give an honest one.

 

'Italy have always just done enough to qualify and that is their record. They just did enough to win the World Cup, they just did enough over the last 20 years. Their history says it. To perform the way we did was great for the boys, so credit where credit is due.

 

'I would be the first to say if we’re rubbish, write and say what you want on TV, but don’t say it for the sake of saying things, to be different. What’s the point? Some people say things for the sake of it and you think ‘What are they doing? What are they trying to achieve? Sell more newspapers or get more viewers?’ It’s ridiculous.'

Yep. And you could take Dunphy's name out and substitute in another half dozen "pundits" and come to the same conclusion.

He's right (Hunt that is). They are a technically limited side. There is no fantasy in how they play but you could never doubt their heart, honesty or commitment. They gave it everything and in the end were unlucky not to get the win. Dunphy was just being a pillock.

Dunphy will love this. I note RTE have it as top story on their site. Dunphy only exists to bring in ratings with his "controversial opinions". Was home last weekend for the game and on the Friday saw Dunphy on that Cafe show on RTE and he was pleasant and charming there, even indulging in some impressive air guitar with the frankly rubbish woirld air guitar champion.

though dunphy was doing the usual nonsense, in the end they would have been really really f***ing lucky to have got the win....dunphy's dicksuck over andy reid is funny though.

The Andy Reid stuff is complete b****x really. Here is a professional who couldn't even be arsed to get himself fit until the start of this season and the Irish media are creaming themselves over him.

its a stick to beat trappatoni with....ireland come second in a group with Italy in it...but we all know if andy reid was in the team wedve finished 1st playing the most stylish football ever....hes that good.

 

 

though to be fair he is better than whelan and andrews, but all said and done theyve got us this far, which is an achievement in itself, my issue with the RTE that night was the refusal to even allow any praise for this.

 

still ... better than bbc, sky or itv pundits

Not sure that Dunphy is anymore - seems to be getting worse with age with his aul contrived controversy schtick.

 

Giles is excellent though.

Agree. Reid has gone from being a fat f*** to a bogtrotting Messi in the space of a few months. Trapatoni has gone the other way, from being a god-like genius to Steve's Staunton's crazed grand-dad. Its funny but embarrassing.

 

Pains me to say this but O'Shea was exceptionally good.

he played very well....even the man of the match, they couldnt let that slide, every one knows they meant Irish man of the match in fact didnt beglin and hamilton stress that but dunphy has to say rubbish it was pirlo..

Was in the Bot. Guy beside me was cheering O'Shea on all night, so I assume he was a Manc supporter. At the end of the game they played YNWA in the bar - not sure why, admittedly. This guy went mad! Started giving the fingers and shouting "f*** off"!!

 

I was winding my manc supporting mate up by singing it, but this fella was talking it really think. Walked into the bogs shouting "we're not f***ing scousers!!".

 

it was class. He hugged me when Ireland went 2-1 up too. My club loyalties could have cost me a fine friendship there.
