With all the current arguments going on about the state of Wembley, it got me thinking about just what an excellent playing surface we have at Anfield. I can't remember the last time I saw the pitch cutting up badly or being difficult to play on.

The ground staff have really done an excellent job in recent years.

very true.

i was watching some old videos from the 70's and 80's and some of those Anfield pitches were awful by comparison.

the technology available to the guys looking after pitches is great now.

one of our local schools has just put down a pitch that is 60% real grass and the rest is synthetic. it looks great and will stand up to be being used 3 or 4 times every day of the week.

some of the great pitches look like they have the feel of a billiard table. it must be a lot easier to play when you know where the boll will roll and bounce. on the negative side, these good pitches still make idiots out of pro footballers.

The pitch always looks fantastic. I did an Anfield mini-tour recently and the lad leading it mentioned that the surface was 5% synthetic. The club apparently spends £1,000,000 a year on maintaining it. That would include wages I guess.

we've been watering it a lot before games and at half time lately. everyone was slipping over, mascherano especially.

I once had to do a tour of Old Trafford on a school trip years ago. When talking about the pitch, the guide said the goal was always to emulate Anfield - which he said was like a billiard table - and try to get it as close to that level.

I seem to remember round about the time of the first Newcastle 4-3 that the pitch was still a bit grotty (my armchair view).

Everything the Mancs do is to try and emulate us.
