Boy, 11, 'Shot Woman Dead With His Own Gun'

4:40pm UK, Monday February 23, 2009

An 11-year-old boy has been charged with killing his father's pregnant girlfriend while she was lying in bed.

Jordan Brown is alleged to have shot the woman in the back of the head and then got on a school bus and went to class in Pennsylvania.

The youngster has been charged as an adult because state law allows prosecutors to charge children as young as 10 with criminal homicide.

But a prison warden says he will ask a judge to move the boy from an adult facility to a juvenile detention centre because the jail cannot accommodate the child.

Lawrence County Warden Charles Adamo says the jail, which houses about 300 prisoners, cannot offer proper long-term care for Brown.

The young suspect is accused of killing 26-year-old Kenzie Marie Houkwho with a shotgun, which apparently belonged to him.

Authorities said the model 20-gauge shotgun was thought to have been found in the boy's bedroom.

It is designed for children and such weapons do not have to be registered.

Mr Houk was eight months pregnant with the child of Brown's father and also had two daughters, aged four and seven.

They lived together in the rural home in Wampum where authorities said the killing took place on Friday.

The suspect was picked up from school on Friday by police, who found Ms Houk's body after her four-year-old told tree cutters at the farmhouse that she thought her mother was dead.

On Saturday, the boy told police there had been a suspicious black truck on the property on the morning of Ms Houk's death.

This led investigators to look into a false lead for about five hours, according to Lawrence County District Attorney John Bongivengo.

Inconsistencies in Brown's description of the vehicle led police to re-interview the victim's seven-year-old daughter, who implicated the boy in the killing, Mr Bongivengo said.
