it's ok when they want to go poaching anyone though isn't it?

Chelsea have turned down Steve Clarke's resignation as assistant first-team coach following an approach by West Ham to take him to Upton Park.

But the Hammers, who named Gianfranco Zola as their new manager on Thursday, are confident Clarke will be his number two, BBC Sport understands.

It is thought negotiations over compensation are ongoing.

Chelsea said West Ham made an approach for Clarke, 45, but they denied permission to speak to him.

"We have not accepted his resignation. Talks are continuing," read a Chelsea statement.

Clarke joined the Stamford Bridge outfit as a player in January 1987 and the defender helped the club win the FA Cup, League Cup and European Cup Winners' Cup before retiring in September 1998.

He went on to join Ruud Gullit as his assistant at Newcastle and had a brief spell as caretaker manager at the Tyneside club after the Dutchman's exit in August 1999 before working under Sir Bobby Robson at St James' Park.

How do you turn down someone's resignation? Surely if they quit, they quit.

Word for word what I was going to post. Spooky.

Well, he is probably under a contract no?

Anyone can resign from a contract though, surely?

This is just to stop him walking straight down to West Ham, they want cash for him.

He probably is, but like Dark Bailo said, he surely must be able to resign from it. I've heard of people offering their resignation if the board want to take it before and having it turned down, but I've never heard of anyone having their resignation refused.

Even outside of football, I've never heard of someone try to quit their job and been told they can't.

They apparently want £5 mil for him.

He has two years (or around 20 months I guess) to go on a £600,000 pa contract.

Taking the ****ing **** or what.

No different to a player I suppose, they can't just resign from a contract either.

Probably. Cuts both ways, doesn't it? He can't resign when he wants and he can't be fired when the boss wants.
