Do these exist any more?

Recall back in the early 90s going to see Jack Dee (good), Jo Brand (average), Ben Elton (awful) and Lee Hurst (OK) on various occasions at the Guild Hall in Preston, and every time there was a support act.

OK, at least twice it was Richard Morton, but that's not the point. At least up-and-coming acts were getting a chance

In the past year I've seen Lee Evans (average), Bill Bailey (excellent) and Eddie Izzard (superb) all play without a support act. While watching Izzard for over two hours is great, surely he's in a prime position to offer someone lower down the food chain the chance to play to a big crowd?

Or is it that arena shows don't lend themselves to 'smaller' acts?
