Leo No.8 Posted June 30, 2008 Posted June 30, 2008 Interested to know were we the first to use that White Stripes song as a footy chant when we adopted it for Mascherano? I hadn't heard it used at a footy game beforehand, and I noticed the German fans were using that particular tune as their anthem for Euro 2008 and other clubs have picked it up. So are we trend setters here or were other fans there first? Anyone know?
theredfella Posted June 30, 2008 Posted June 30, 2008 Heard the Italians and Spanish doing it as well.
Leo No.8 Posted June 30, 2008 Author Posted June 30, 2008 Exactly - it was everywhere! That's why I was interested to know if it was from our lead. It would mean Liverpool providing the winning goalscorer and the most popular tune of the tournament...
aka Dus Posted June 30, 2008 Posted June 30, 2008 All the teams down in Austria were using it. It's been used by some Italian clubs for a year or two now as far as I have been told.
johngibo YPC Posted June 30, 2008 Posted June 30, 2008 Deffo not the firstItaly were singing it all through World Cup 2006. The players were singing it off the open top bus as well. It was there ring of fire if you will.I went to Croatia that summer and there were loads of Italians on holiday. That tune came on in a club and the place went off
CarraLegend Posted June 30, 2008 Posted June 30, 2008 Nope, it's been round Italy for years, Roma used to do it loads. I went to the Rome Derby in December 06 and Roma were doing it then Lazio hammered Roma and spent the last few minutes doing it at Roma along with some weird hand movement.
Caramba Posted June 30, 2008 Posted June 30, 2008 (edited) I read an article about it the other day. It was the Club Brugge fans that started to use the song a few years ago. Then they played against Roma, and their fans started using the song over in Italy. When Italy won the world cup a couple of years ago, they were first only singing "po-po-po.." and "de-de-de..." to the melody, before the supporters started using the text "Cam-pioni-del-Mon-do" (We're the World Champions), and this version reached the top of the hit lists in Italy. It's after this we started singing the Mascherano song. Edited June 30, 2008 by Caramba
Frosty Jack Posted June 30, 2008 Posted June 30, 2008 Roma were first as far as I know, 3 or so years back
Behind Enemy Lines Posted June 30, 2008 Posted June 30, 2008 Roma were first as far as I know, 3 or so years backSure it wasn't Celtic?
Duncan Disorderly Posted June 30, 2008 Posted June 30, 2008 It would mean Liverpool providing the winning goalscorer and the most popular tune of the tournament...Senor and Senora Torres and The White Stripes might have first dibs there.
Frosty Jack Posted June 30, 2008 Posted June 30, 2008 Sure it wasn't Celtic? Nah the mancs sung it once in the 50s though
Ostrich Man Posted June 30, 2008 Posted June 30, 2008 Nah the mancs sung it once in the 50s thoughno that was The Fields of Athenry i think.
cymrococh Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 Roma were first as far as I know, 3 or so years backYeah, Totti was asked in an interview what his favourite song/band was and he said something like" I don't know the name, but I like the one that goes da-da da da-da daaa daaa." Roma fans started it from there.
mally Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 No it's not.Yes it is. I'm my opinion it sounds moronic (especially the euro version with no words). What a sight, tens of thousands of continental europeans chanting the bassline from an old white stripes song for absolutely no reason other than that they saw some other fans do it in the previous match. and we only use it because Mascherano's name fits which i suppose adds some wit

I think that's the offical Lazio hand movement...
Caramba Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 Yeah, Totti was asked in an interview what his favourite song/band was and he said something like" I don't know the name, but I like the one that goes da-da da da-da daaa daaa." Roma fans started it from there. From Wikipedia: The song is popular in sporting venues, particularly football. Italian football fans often chant the song's signature guitar riff, most notably during Italy's victory in the FIFA World Cup 2006. About 10 million Italians were supposedly singing the song "Across the Nation" the night following the final. They picked the song up when AS Roma played in and against Club Brugge for the UEFA Cup [5]. The song was also played at the opening of every game in the UEFA Euro 2008 Football Tournament, although not in its entirety.[6] and was adopted by fans attending the tournament as a terrace chant.
Dominus Maximus Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 Aalborg BK has done this for a couple of years already....
