players you felt still had a role to play when they were sold

Wondering what players you felt could still have gone on to make a positive impact had they stayed at the club. For me

Murphy - even today, I could see his use in the squad, assuming he maintained his level.

Matteo - thought it was well harsh that he was sold in favor of ziege. Turned out to be a good defender for leeds. Maybe not starting material at that point, but well worth keeping innthe squad imo.

Garcia

Heskey

Owen

Cisse (In hindsight, not at the time)

Sinama-Pongolle. Would have been decent as back-up to Torres and used in the positions Kuyt / Babel have been playing

Staunton. Souness was off his rocker.

Staunton, Pongolle, Le Tallec, Warnock.

Only Beardsley really.

Staunton, to a degree, but Beardsley was the one that straight away made the manager look stupid for letting him go.

None of the others listed om this thread went on to maintain any level of high level form.

Lightly letting Alonso go, would be a massive mistake.

Staunton and Houghton were part of the Villa side that finished 2nd to Utd in 92, i think that indicates they went on to perform at a higher level after leaving us.

MacMahon was still better than anything we had at the time.

Utd finished 2nd in '92, not Villa.

I agree we could have kept Houghton one more season (he wasn't what eh had been, but was still a good player), and Staunton had a grreat couple of years (that's why I mentioned him), but Beardsley remained at the top of his game.

We could also mention Clemence and Jimmy Case, Terry Mcdermott even, but Beardsley still stands out for me as a sale of crazy irrationality.

FFS 92, 93 whatever

The point for me is that they remained better plkayers thatn the ones we replaced them with, even if it was for a season or two.

Oh, I'm being pedantic am I ?

I soddin' well mentioned Staunton as one we shouldn't have sold. So basically you're pulling up my generalisation based on the evidence of one half decent season by Ray Houghton. In the Souness era every player who left made him look a c*nt to some degree or other. You might as well throw Dean Saunders into the pot.

You were a bit pedantic yeah

Dean Saunders didnt help win us the league championship, all the other i mentioned did.

The thread is about players who still had a role to play for the club but were sold. You cranky get. :inoffensivesmileydesignednottoirritatebearswithsoreheads:

You can revise history if ya want and claim Houghton only had 'half a decent season' for Villa but that was still more than we got out of Paul Stewart.

Dont know if this is common consencus (sp?) but I always thought Litmanen was under rated and woefully under used. A great player I thought.

I cant think of an example of an Arsenal player that was almost always injured and when fit only performed in one match out of three.

If i could i'd liken Litmanan to him. ;)
