sutty Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 A couple of things. Easy to forger how f***ing good fowler was at that time. His raping of Staunton for that goal is the highlight but he is outstanding Another thing that just made me laugh is that the commentator has just said "Villa are clearly missing the midfield presence of Mark Draper" A sentence never uttered before or since I think.
Leroy Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 Some of the passing reminded me of the present Arsenal & Barnsey not scored for 7 months never realised that.
floyd the barber Posted March 4, 2008 Posted March 4, 2008 also reminds me of how crap our defence was...
Zoob Posted March 4, 2008 Posted March 4, 2008 That team could attack. We really should have won the league, and I wonder when - if ever - we'll again have a front 2 that score 50+ in a season. It's a pity our defence was so utterly woeful, and that it wasn't the David James of 10 years later in goal. We really were very good to watch attacking, but just horrible defensively.

Its the same David James, He makes the same mistakes that he used to make 10 years ago
abc Posted March 4, 2008 Posted March 4, 2008 (edited) The defence that year was (joint) 2nd best in the league. In the next season before James imploded during the Newcastle game, we had the best defence and attack in the league at that point. But hey, don't let facts get in the way of a general opinion... Football has definitely changed in the past few years though... Edited March 4, 2008 by abc
Bailo Posted March 4, 2008 Posted March 4, 2008 Football has definitely changed in the past few years though...Couldn't believe how much time and space people had in the middle of the pitch. Also how slow the pace was generally.

Yup, which makes the way Man Utd and especially Arsenal play football nowadays all the more impressive. McAteer was actually pretty good at whipping in crosses, never really realised that back then. Maybe the quality of crossing has deteriorated these days due to the balls being lighter. Nevertheless, I happen to have a copy of the Man Utd 2-0 game at Anfield from that season, and the pace was pretty intense then...
Snoeker Posted March 4, 2008 Posted March 4, 2008 Thats why Barnes could still survive. I'll tell you what though, McAteer's crossing in the cup final that year was shoite.
Murphman Posted March 4, 2008 Posted March 4, 2008 also reminds me of how crap our defence was... Aye. When Sami and Hench came in I immediately became aware of how it's supposed to be, that long balls into our box and crosses were being returned with interest. Under Roy we always looked liked f*cking it up and not clearing our lines. Plus James was a liabilty of course.
