I'm not surprised he's done well at Bolton. On his few starts for us I always thought he looked calm and assured on the ball, he always seemed to find space and his passing was good, in fact he reminds me a lot of how Lucas has started his Liverpool career. I think we will sell him.

Hes only worth keeping if hes good enough, unfortunately for Guthrie he plays in a position where we have lots of top players 3 of them in their early 20's and hes not going to get regular games if he stays here.

 

A good youth system not only produces players for the 1st team, but those that arent good enough hopefully show enough while out on loan so that we get a decent fee for them, thats something Man Utd have done for a while, some of the money they've got for their ressies is ridiculous, wasnt it 6.5 million for Richardson?

If Momo is going to be sold there might be more sense in having Guthrie as 4th choice CM than someone like Momo or Albelda. Haven't seen much of Guthrie this season so it is hard for me to say whether he is good enough for our midfield. I remember liking what I saw when he came on last season.

He is good, and I like the lad but - he's not Liverpool good, and Gerrard, Masch and Lucas all offer more - behind them (excluding Momo for the minute) is a small host of ressies that look like they will be significantly better than Guthrie. We should get between £4-6m for him if he carries on as he is.

We have the likes of Gary MacKay Steven, Alex Kacaniklic, Astrit Ajdarevic, Damien Plessis, and Francisco Duran all making progress, i'm not sure about Pacheco and Bruna or where they will fit in, one of those could eclipse the class of Guthrie, Hammill and Anderson. Sooner or later one of Rafa's kids is going to be too good to ignore for the first team and we'll have something truly special.

 

I'd like to see a youngster like Guthrie step up into Rafa's squad but the decision should be taken without sentiment. Compare him to other players we could buy in and see how he matches up. FWIW I think his performances at Bolton are getting exagerrated.

Time will tell, these young midfielders were scouted by the biggest clubs in Europe, they are generally playing international youth football and regarded as some of the best young players in their countries. They already look, to me at least, to have better technique than our youth cup winning players had. My hunch is that a couple of these kids will go on to become genuine stars in the premier league in a couple of seasons.

I think Duran is back playing now.

 

Is Guthrie good enough to get in our squad for next season ? I hope so but I wonder if he's at the level we'll need an attacking midfielder to be. Guthrie would be competing with Babel, Pennant, Gerrard, Kewell (or his replacement) and Benayoun for a place. Sissoko has to go, so there is a midfield squad berth in theory but I think Rafa will want a ball-winner rather than Guthrie.

It never going to be that kind of choice though.

If were bringing someone in as an attacking midfielder it will be a winger of real international class. I don't see us buying a squad player in that position at all. We already have 5 ahead of Guthrie in the pecking order so I can't imagine him playing many games at all.
