Montse Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 Liverpool's Crouch branded cheat by refs chiefs tribalfooball.com - September 04, 2007 Liverpool striker Peter Crouch has been branded a cheat by FIFA refereeing chiefs. The amazing revelation has come from England's former top official Graham Poll. Poll claimed that, before last summer's World Cup finals in Germany, FIFA refereeing chiefs singled out England's 6ft 7in striker and told officials to crack down on him. Crouch is suspended for Saturday's crunch Euro 2008 qualifier with Israel, having picked up two cautions in just five international matches this season. The difference between that figure and his record for Liverpool is marked - he received only two yellow cards in 49 appearances last term - and Poll may have provided a reason why. He said: "At the World Cup last year, we were shown videos of England games. "The head of refereeing at FIFA said, 'Look at this big fella Crouch. He's a real pain and getting away with too much. We need to mark him as a player we need to look out for'. "We watched England's warm-up games and it was pointed out the way he used his arms. I tried to defend him, being English." ere I think we can all name a few strikers that ought to wear that tag, I certainly wouldnt have said Crouchy was one of em! He cant help being big n gangly
Rimbeux Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 I dont think he does anything that any other player doesn't do when he jomps,, just that his shoulders and arms are going to be 6 inches higher than most, meaning he'll often have his arm above the defenders shoulder, and also smart defenders will get underneath him and make it look as if they've been climbed on. It's tough to know what to suggest for him beyond concentrating on jumping with his arms moving straight up and down in sort of boxers pose, and not coming out in a circular breast stroke fashion.

The big lad seems to get an extraordinary amount of calls against him. he just seems to have to stand his ground in the box when a ball is coming in and the whistle goes.
Frosty Jack Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 That explains it, i remember that in the portugal game it was a foul every time he went up for a ball in the box
Rimbeux Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 Koller was never singled out like that. We dont know that, maybe he modified his game to keep his arms off the oppo
Stevie H Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 That explains it, i remember that in the portugal game it was a foul every time he went up for a ball in the boxyet he got away with yanking that guy's dreadlocks against trinidad and tobago. isn't it very FIFA to target a tall bloke rather than the actual cheats?
genghis Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 What a bunch of f***ing d****eads. Agreed. Utter, utter c**ts. How incredibly unprofessional of the HEAD of the WORLD refereeing body to single out one player. Moreso that he doesn't do anything wrong other than 'be taller than other people'. Anyone know if this might be illegal under EU law? By directing refs to give him more yellows (effectively) than other players, isn't that ensuring he won't play (i.e. work) as often? Restraint of trade? Not to mention defamation - if I went to a work conference and told managers of other companies that a particular contractor was a cheat I would be sued out of existence by whoever I'd accused. Just an idea, like.

Ronnie Whelan Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 On contrary, I would say crouch is probably one of the most fouled players in the Premiership. Every time a ball comes near him the defenders are all over him and are very rarely penalised.

Just an idea, like. I was listening when Poll actually said what he said, recounting what goes on in refs meetings. He said that particular instances are pointed out at the meetings, and Crouch came up as one who was 'getting away' with persistent fouling and needed to be watched. He said other players were also pointed out but didn't name names. He also said there were discussions in the meetings he's been in both here and for UEFA and FIFA about players who go down easy, ones who are the target of fouling or ones who are tough to manage on the pitch.
Gomez Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 This doesn't surprise me. The big lad seems to get an extraordinary amount of calls against him. he just seems to have to stand his ground in the box when a ball is coming in and the whistle goes. I said this after a european match last year that the refs seemed to target Crouch. I was told I was being paranoid. They'd have been better served showing clips of Ronaldo and Joe Cole diving, or maybe they didn't have several hours to spare.
Ronnie Whelan Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 I wonder were John Terry and Frank Lampard mentioned at this meeting for their consistent harrassing of referees?

ManxRed Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 I have, for the last two years, been continually baffled as to why Crouch gets penalised for a foul every time the ball goes within 10 yards of him during our European games and England games, sometimes when he's stood on his own. Now I know why. Oh well... referees aren't corrupt, referees aren't corrupt (if I say this enough times, will I eventually believe it?), referees aren't corrupt...
Cooldude Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 Crouch probably got the record for the most amount of "fouls" committed in World Cup history. He got s***loads of them It's total rubbish refereeing to make pre-determined judgement on a player or situation. It is just bulls*** how some of them literally singles out a couple of players and they're "out there to get them". Crouchzinho gets penalised for nothing more than being a big man and looks to be all over his opponents in contests because he is just so much bigger in physical frame than them when in fact it was all fair game. Remembered when Reina got busted for "stepping over the line to take a kick" last year at the Reebok when he didn't. He was running close a couple of matches before hand but it was another example of refs singling out players before a game and pre-determined decisions

He was running close a couple of matches before hand but it was another example of refs singling out players before a game and pre-determined decisionsI agree totally. I think the main reason Crouch gets targeted is his physique. He's really not very strong, so if a defender leans into him, he will invariably buckle a bit and then drape himself over the defender. Humans are very much programmed to think big thing dominates little thing, and so ref sees Crouch leaning on a player and gives a foul. In contrast, leaning into Jan Koller is like leaning into a wall - nothing happens (from what I've seen) and Jan goes on his merry way. I think it's unfair, but the best think Crouch can do is bulk up (however much that is possible), although at this point he might already have the reputation permanently with FIFA/UEFA refs.
Koogan Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 Surprise surprise, the guy in question is NOT French! He's a Spaniard by the looks of it, the name is José María García-Aranda. That's him singled out then...
Bailo Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 Surprise surprise, the guy in question is NOT French! He's a Spaniard by the looks of it, the name is José María García-Aranda. That's him singled out then...Isn't he the guy who reversed his penalty decision against us v Roma? And wouldn't let the guy get treatment and kept telling him to get up, when he was clearly faking it?
Rory Fitzgerald Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 José María García-Aranda. That's him singled out then... Surely not the guy in this article................I reckon we can let him off, we owe him one
Guest Kaizer Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 (edited) Well they should have watched him even closer, I guess a lot of people from Trinidad and Tobago would say the refs did not actually blow enough against him Tall players will always be in the danger of getting calls against them, I remember Jostein Flo for Norway, he usually never did anything wrong but got fouls against him all the time because he was big and strong. Nebraska Red Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 (edited) I am just amazed that the refs actually talk about these things. You wouldn't think so when you watch some of them handling a game. If they really did talk about players in this way, why hasn't Rooney been red carded in every game he plays ?
