Mark Gonzalez is set to leave Liverpool for Real Betis after one season at the club.

Rafa Benitez today confirmed the two sides had "almost" reached an agreement over the Chilean winger.

 

Bolo Zenden, whose contract expires in the summer, has also been told he can talk to other clubs.

 

Benitez said: "I was talking with him before and I said he could talk with other teams. He knows the situation.

 

"It's clear some players will leave. We almost have an agreement with Real Betis for Mark Gonzalez."

 

Really wasn't worth all the fuss with this guy was it?

What I like about this is the fact that Rafa is prepared to get rid of players who are not at the level needed. No more Diaos sitting around for 3-4 years. Prove your worth or you are out.

 

This also gives me a suspicion that someone is lined up for left wing as Kewell and Leto surely is not enough.

Zenden too most likely....have to say tho, I know he played s**** today but he didn't deserve some of the bile i heard directed at him, kind of wanted him to prove them wrong smicer style but alas, I think thats the biggest match he's ever going to play in and he bottled it really.

Thought Zenden looked unfit, to be honest. did hsi best, but he was slow - moreso than usual.

 

Rafa only had two injured splayers to choose from, i suppose.

This doesn't surprise me. As much as I wanted Gonzalez to stay for another season, I'm pleased that Rafa has moved so quickly to correct any "mistakes" he feels he has made in the transfer market.

 

It's one of the things that makes Rafa a fantastic manager. If a player doesn't prove his worth, he's out the door. No more hanging around in the reserves until your contract runs out.

 

I'm glad to see Zenden leaving as well.

 

I wonder what kind of fee we'll get for Gonzalez. Would 5M be too hopeful?

Wow that was quick. Not that its totally unexpected but I thought he would stay for one more season given how much we wanted to get him. He tried his best whenever he was on the pitch though, but he tends to be too hard on himself and that messed up his confidence.

 

Like Moro, he will probably do much better in Spain.

Bolo seems like a great bloke from what other players say, but at the end of the day he's not good enough, we need to keep Kewell and buy some quality competition for him, remember we also have Garcia who can play there

Looks like Gonzalez is already on the way. With Zenden, Fowler and Dudek also not being offered new contracts, the big clear out is beginning. Who does everyone think will go? I hope Kewell, Garcia and Hyypia stay. As for Alonso, who knows? He's one of our best players but I get the feeling he might want to go home. Don't think Momo, Crouch or Riise will be sold. Pennant deserves another year too. Carson is a strange one too. The only definites for next season I would say are Reina, Arbeloa, Carragher, Finnan, Agger, Gerrard, Mascherano and Kuyt.

 

As for ins, Eto'o would be perfect. Otherwise I'd still have Owen back. I think we'll get Alves and maybe Simao. We'll also need a new substitute keeper if Carson moves and a back up centre back if Sami moves on.
