ask Martin Keown how clinical he is from 12 yards (RvN that is)

Quite agree, so representative of his career.

Ronaldo is. RVN is on a par with Owen IMO.

Agree about Ronaldo, but he's a more consistent finisher than Owen

Owen's record in the premiership and Europe doesn't match van Nistelrooy's. About 150 in 300 for Michael, something like 90 in 140 for horseface which is remarkable. Dunno how well he's been doing since leaving the mancs mind you.

Owen when he's fully fit is as good as RVN IMO, he always struggles for a few games after coming back from injuries though.

Disgaree and I know mike quite well.

Horseface is an exceptional goalpoacher but offers little else. Mickey does, his allround game has improved a lot over the years. IMO Makaay is as good as RVN.

None though are a patch on Batigol

See, I'd put form there with fitness. I don't think I'm doing him a diservice by saying he's always been a streaky goalscorer, and those streaks of form, good and bad, were not all injury related

He'd have only played 1 in 4 games. Or the curse which appears to turn all our strikers into TIMMAY! in front of goal would have hit him.

I dont' know where this myth that Michael Owen has some sort of great all-around game has come from. Receiving the ball 40 yards from goal and then desperately looking around for your fullback for a layoff isn't an all-around game. Obviously he's still a great striker, but frankly the madness must stop.

You're describing Michael Owen circa 2000-1 - since when his all round game has improved...you're just as likely to see him pop up on the wing or in the hole making link play. \generally it seems to be easier for forwards to get goals in Spain (and the Netherlands for that matter), as thy have more time and defences are generally not as hard working as they are here, the game more tight and compressed. Michael himself got into double figures in less than half a season on more or less a goal a game. Don't forget RVN's figures also include a shedload of penalties.

If we're going to go with this, and I'm no fan of this line of thought, how about acknowledging that the technical level of the players and the creative talent in that league is significantly higher, that teams are on the whole more attacking, and do so with more quality and threat than in England, making things tougher for defenders

Yeah, look at Real's two goals last night, you just don't see goals like that here. We have less playmakers over here who can play that clever ball into the forwards. Midfielders don't really score as many goals in Spain, it's all about setting up chances for the forwards, like it used to be in England.

If it's so easy to score how come the top 4 in Spain have scored:

Barca - 63

Real - 51

Sevilla - 57

Valencia - 47

while in the Premiership it's

Man United - 83

Chelsea - 63

Liverpool - 55

Arsenal - 63

And yet England had 3 teams in the European Cup semi finals. When this happened with Spanish teams a few years ago it was rightly taken as evidence of that League's superiority. Now the English Premier League is the top League again.

And there are two spanish sides in the UEFA cup final, what does that say about the depth, in the very recent past as you say it was a year with Spanish in the CL semis, then one with an Italian final. I'd say this year's performance is a very good indicator of quality at the top level as it was with the Spanish and Italians in those seasons, I'm not so sure that quality goes much further than four teams in the PL right now

It doesn't appear to work that way though. Apparently now we have to look to the UEFA cup or something to see the true strength of leagues or something that means english football is crap anyway.

What it says is that the Spanish League's pretty good - probably the 2nd best in the world - but not as good as the English league.

Spot on that.

He's about 6,5/10 in the build-up play, if someone like Henry is 10/10.

If Celtic and Rangers make the CL semis next year does it suddenly make the Scottish league better than the English league?

England and Spain both have 3 or 4 top quality teams. It's marginal as to whose are better but this year England's best have undoubtedly been strong.

What separates the two is that in Spain there lies a bulk of very good teams outside the top 4. You'd only have to watch the UEFA Cup and have a glance at the Spanish league table to recognise that.
