Can't see what value he would bring to the squad. Decent enough player, but not what we need at all.

Gabri joins Ajax Amsterdam from Barcelona

AMSTERDAM, June 6 (Reuters) - Barcelona's versatile defender Gabri has signed for Ajax on a three-year contract starting in July, the Dutch team said on Tuesday.

Amsterdam are now coached by Henk ten Cate, former number two to Frank Rijkaard at Barcelona.

Gabri, 27, said on the Dutch team's website: 'I chose Ajax first and foremost for the coach. I worked with him for three years at Barcelona. He knows me well and I know him well.'

Gabri has won three caps for Spain but found his chances limited over the past two seasons because of knee and ankle injuries. He left European champions Barcelona last month.

Ten Cate, noting that players usually move to Barcelona from Ajax and not the other way round, said of Gabri: 'He is a winner - a soccer player with many qualities and a great running capacity.'

If he has lots of knee and ankle injuries, can't see him running as well as that staement says

Just realised that you meant he joined ajax on a freeand not available on a free

Ajax defender Gabri admits he would be keen to talk to Liverpool should Rafa Benitez make an approach over the summer.

The former Barcelona man has been linked with a move to Anfield when the transfer window opens as Benitez will have funds at his disposal following George Gillett and Tom Hicks' takeover at Anfield.

Gabri has only spent one season in Holland and was strongly linked with a possible move to the Premiership when his contract with Barca expired last summer.

Despite professing to enjoying life in the Dutch capital, Gabri admits the chance to join Liverpool would be difficult to ignore.

"I'd like Ajax to study the option if it finally arrives from Liverpool," Gabri is quoted in The Mirror.

"I'm very happy in Amsterdam but a club like Liverpool is attractive for any player.

"A Spanish club and some Spanish players would also be an influence."

However, Liverpool are yet to confirm their interest and have adequate resources at right-back having signed Alvaro Arbeloa to compete with Steve Finnan in January.

Bit worried about this one... seems to be a bit to it. Just hope Rafa doesn't decide to cram the squad full in the summer. I'm a firm believer in the Knox doctrine of 2 big signings only.
