Not the best source and can't find it anywhere else but if we haven't been able to sign Iriome Gonzalez from Tenerife then makes sense we're after another young winger.

Liverpool set to snap up Sheffield Utd youngster

tribalfooball.com - March 03, 2007

Liverpool are eyeing Sheffield United's teenage winger Jacob Mellis.

Rafa Benitez, who has recently signed a host of top Spanish kids, is closing in on a deal for the Under-16 prospect who is about to quit the Blades.

Mellis starred for the United side against Liverpool in the FA Youth Cup and is now set to head for Anfield before he signs a professional contract at Bramall Lane.

Anyone know anything about the lad or see him play against us in the youth cup?

Have we got someone from Cambridge City on trial too?

On the subject of young wingers I'd like to see Hammill given some first team involvement in pre season to see how he shapes up. He's been in sparkling form for Dunfermilne since going up there and is a very talented kid...

i agree. he seems to improved a lot with some proper competition. His goal at the weekend was great.

He's right footed isn't he? But I think I read somewhere that he prefers to play on the left or am I just making that up!?

If so maybe he has a chance to get some games next season.

re hamill, the question is will he be good enough for premiership or champions league appearances. if not, then he'd be better off having next season on loan ata competitive level rather than waiting around for the odd fa/carling cup run-out.

more generally, it appears we are making a fairly major investment in youth. for this to make sense, the club must be anticipating making space for the youngsters who are good enough to get into the first team. like wenger has done. in time, we may see fewer "squad player" purchases, and others being allowed to leave.

only a good thing if it happens. appears the way recruitment at many well-run clubs is going

Liverpool chase Ross County kid

Liverpool are understood to be considering a six-figure offer for Ross County 16-year-old Gary Mackay Steven.

The midfielder recently impressed the English Premiership outfit during a four-day trial.

And BBC Sport understands that Liverpool are likely to follow that up with a cash bid.

Steven is a member of Ross County's Under-19 squad but has yet to break into the Dingwall-based Scottish First Division side's first-team.

Can I be the first to say please let this be true...

Saw Mellis play for England in the Victory Shield earlier this season along with out lad Sean Highdale, he looked a good player. There's a hell of a lot of good players at that age group for England too.
