Cahill : Rafa was frustrated.......and our gameplan worked

Tim Cahill says Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez knows Merseyside rivals Everton are not a small club.

The former Valencia manager labelled The Toffees a 'small club' after being left frustrated following Saturday's goalless draw between the two clubs.

The Spaniard's comments upset many connected with the Goodison Park outfit, with Everton having claimed four out of a possible six points against their neighbours.

Cahill, who is preparing for Australia's friendly with Denmark at Loftus Road, feels the frustration of Saturday's game was to explain for Benitez's remarks.

"I reflected about it after the game," Cahill told Sky Sports News.

"My first initial reaction was that it was very harsh, but after I'd thought about it, I thought he was very frustrated.

"He' a manager, and our manager (David Moyes) gets frustrated as well.

"It's not something I like to emphasise too much on, but he knows we're not a small club.

"They're a massive club, they beat Chelsea 2-0 at home, and it pays respect and a compliment to the manager and to the players that we frustrated them that much.

"We had a game plan. We wanted them to boot the ball long and tried to upset their game, and that's what happened.

"To get a draw at Anfield is massive, and four points out of six (this season), I don't really need to say any more."

I dont know if anyone else felt this way but I wanted Crouch off and Fowler on mid-way through the 2nd half - Stubbs and Yobo mopped up almost everything and thats all we had in our locker

I dont want to sound wise after the event but I would have taken off Crouch and put Fowler on or take Crouch off and put Zenden on to play in midfield and let Gerrard get further forward. Its fruitless now to talk about this but now that Everton have said that was their gameplan and someone like me spotted that we were getting no joy, I wonder why it wasnt changed - or do others feel that we proceeded on the right path ?

I think I would have tried Gonzalez with about 25/30 minutes left. By that point there seemed to be a sense we weren't getting anywhere.

So, to summarise : We knew we had no chance of winning so we put 11 men behind the ball and defended for our lives as our only option because basically, we're a small team.

FFS. How many more of these paranoid idiots are they going to wheel out to prove they are a big team?

3 days later and they are still protesting.

i'd have taken Kuyt off for Fowler with 20 to go myself and left Crouch on and then Gonzalez for Riise.

Gone to a back three? Perhaps.

Think it's worth remembering that the one time we loaded the left we scored an offside goal and totally opened them. Pennant had acres right at times as well. Gonzalez for Crouch with thirty and then Fowler for Riise with ten.

EDIT: Point remains it needed changing and needed changing earlier.

as i said in the match thread 3 man midfield against a 5 man midfield was rafas gaff. not a single second ball won in the entire game.

this was a derby, to win a derby, you have to win the midfield.

Yes, think he should have stayed 4-4-2. They completely strangled the middle areas, with Xabi particularly suffering, never once got his head up and dictated.

I wanted Didi Hamann on at half-time in Istanbul and Smicer was definitely my first choice to replace Kewell

i'd have considered zenden for crouch actually. the problem with starting 4-3-3 is that it's never going to leave you with much on the bench if it doesn't go to plan. we were nowhere near scoring, and it should have been addressed. throwing fowler on smacked of desparation.

See what you're getting at. Fair comment, that.
