badtodabone Posted February 4, 2007 Posted February 4, 2007 just read this4 February 2007£120M: RAFA WILL HAVE CASH TO BURNFootball: LIVERPOOL TO JOIN THE BIG SPENDERS Rafa will have cash to burn after takeoverBy Paul SmithLIVERPOOL boss Rafa Benitez will be handed an astonishing £120MILLION transfer budget if the proposed American takeover goes through this week. US tycoons George Gillett and Tom Hicks are set to take control at Anfield. Under formal proposals of a projected £480m takeover, additional funding will be made available to Benitez to ensure Liverpool can match their free-spending rivals in the transfer market and compete for honours. Gillett, who owns National Hockey side Montreal Canadiens, and Hicks, who owns NHL franchise Dallas Stars as well as the Texas Rangers baseball team, will split the £700m costs, which include funding for a new stadium. Liverpool's decision to accept the American offer in preference to doing a deal with Dubai International Capital is widely thought to have come about after Gillett and Hicks put a far more lucrative package together. Shareholders including chairman David Moores will profit from the deal, debts will be immediately addressed and proposals over a new stadium accelerated. But it's the activity in the transfer market that will be of primary interest to fans and should delight Benitez, who has publicly voiced his frustrations at buying within a limited budget compared with the clubs Liverpool are supposed to be challenging.linkyyour views please im curious how they know
anny road Posted February 4, 2007 Posted February 4, 2007 just read this linkyyour views please im curious how they know see my post below it seems people linked to Gillett / Hicks ahave been briefing the papers.......
Tosh Posted February 4, 2007 Posted February 4, 2007 we've suddenly gone from £180m (inc all that huge debt) plus the stadium guarantees... to £700m Wow. I wish my name was Liverpool FC, I'd be significantly richer this Sunday than i was last
Guest Sabre Posted February 4, 2007 Posted February 4, 2007 I can't help thinking that this was always the plan...
McBain Posted February 4, 2007 Posted February 4, 2007 the positive pr spinning starts in earnest It's in most of the rags
Magic8Ball Posted February 4, 2007 Posted February 4, 2007 means we wont get any reasonably priced players now ( or at best it will be so much harder ) the good news if true means we'll be shopping in the top end of the market which is where we need to shop to get the free scoring wingers we really need
anny road Posted February 4, 2007 Posted February 4, 2007 f*** that, true or not i am sure Rafa will turn down the chance to buy who he wants
Dan Posted February 4, 2007 Posted February 4, 2007 We only need a bit of tweaking so i seriously doubt anywhere near that much will be spent anyway

Rimbeux Posted February 4, 2007 Posted February 4, 2007 i am sure Rafa will turn down the chance to buy who he wants Raf's job is to get three points, to win games, he will take any advantage he can legally get hold of, he's a professional, it's what he gets paid to do. I'm a fan, a stakeholder, it's an emotional thing, a philosophical thing. It's not just about winning. I'd like the club to be self sustaining, not reliant on a rich owner paying for players or the runing of the club. I've got no problem with someone coming in and investing in infrastructure, increasing the value of the club, generating more cash, but existing beyond the natural means of the club bothers me big time.
Dan Posted February 4, 2007 Posted February 4, 2007 i can see him speninding quite big on a striker I can too, Villa i'd imagine. After that though, maybe strengthening down the left side would be the only other major investment.
ChrisC Posted February 4, 2007 Posted February 4, 2007 i can see him speninding quite big on a striker Lets hope so...
Magic8Ball Posted February 4, 2007 Posted February 4, 2007 Not just a striker ! I can see Rafa spending big on creative goal scorers - 2 top class wingers would make an amazing difference I dont see a striker as making such a difference unless its someone like Henry and there is only one of him Under Rafa we tend to control a game, hold possession and destroy the opposition attack quite well this helps our defending however in the opposition 3rd we seem to lack invention and an ability ( in general ) to create lots of chances this is where the creative players would come in Having a top class striker and not creating chances for him would be more a waste than creating chances for the strikers we have

Magic8Ball Posted February 4, 2007 Posted February 4, 2007 we have created lods of chances this seasonsadly I only ever see Liverpool on Tv or sometimes when the come to London in my experience we really do lack invention in the final third - this becomes more obvious against well organised teams determined to defend now I'm sure you will say that applies to all teamsbut I keep seeing our Central midfield try to thread a needle with a long ball, and I see our wide player put in poor crosses, through balls etc basically we have 2 modes - long ball (usually fairly accurate so its not kick and hope ) but its easy to defend against or wide and crossagain predictable so I dont know whether its the movement of the strikers or the poor set up play but it seems to me we would benefit from players who can do what C Ronaldo and Rooney do - Run with the ball beat players and draw defenders out of position for our quarter back style CM's
alias75 Posted February 4, 2007 Posted February 4, 2007 I really want Alves here next season, especially if we're going to be playing 3 at the back more often hes ideal to bomb up and down that right hand side. Then we only need someone for the left side.
tomski Posted February 4, 2007 Posted February 4, 2007 sadly I only ever see Liverpool on Tv or sometimes when the come to London in my experience we really do lack invention in the final third - this becomes more obvious against well organised teams determined to defend now I'm sure you will say that applies to all teamsbut I keep seeing our Central midfield try to thread a needle with a long ball, and I see our wide player put in poor crosses, through balls etc basically we have 2 modes - long ball (usually fairly accurate so its not kick and hope ) but its easy to defend against or wide and crossagain predictable so I dont know whether its the movement of the strikers or the poor set up play but it seems to me we would benefit from players who can do what C Ronaldo and Rooney do - Run with the ball beat players and draw defenders out of position for our quarter back style CM's Good analysis, which is why Garcia is important to the team. A little bit of Dalglish like cunning would have been useful yesterday.
RafaShanks Posted February 4, 2007 Posted February 4, 2007 I hope I'm wrong, but I'd hate us to become like Chelsea, paying ridiculously over inflated transfer fees for overated players. Don't get me wrong, I want top class players here, but within reason. £25m for someone like Villa is just feckin ridiculous.
hideNseek Posted February 4, 2007 Posted February 4, 2007 We only need 3 players to win the title. Doesn't mean because you've been given big money you have to spend it. Rafa WILL ONLY spend big money if he thinks said player is worth it. He is not Maureen and will not spend 10 mill over the odds to get someone. I hope I'm wrong, but I'd hate us to become like Chelsea, paying ridiculously over inflated transfer fees for overated players. Don't get me wrong, I want top class players here, but within reason. £25m for someone like Villa is just feckin ridiculous. But if Rafa thinks he's worth it then you can guarantee he is.
