Over the years FIFA have made changes to the game to try and give the advantage to attackers, to put the focus on attacking football and yet...

defenders like f***ing Lescott can barge an attacker 2 yards off the ball, never having been in control of the ball and making no attempt whatsoever to play it, and get away with it.

It f***s me off, particularly after you've been watching a poor performance from your team and every moment near Everton's area gets you on the edge of your seat.

How do they get away with it ? If Xabi did that to Arteta in midfield, it would be a foul. Why not when defenders do it ?

It's a foul. It's like when Marwood will compliment a defender for pushing Crouch off the ball in the box instead of going for the ball - you just want to reach into the tv, grab the ref and Marwood and rip them to shreds

It doesn't help when Crouch goes down every time he goes for the ball. He needs to actually try and win the header instead of looking for the foul every time.

Yeah it's one of those situations open too much to interpretation, on the part of the refs.

I think something similar arises in ice hockey vis a vis shoulder charging only being legal when the puck is under dispute. Maybe someone could enlighten me on that.

It's all about the arms. The defender cannot use his arms to block the attacker and once he does, the ref should blow for a direct free kick.

it's in the rules & it's straightforwars - you can do it if the ball's in playing distance, i.e. you are able to reach it. Unfortunately, it's rarely in playing distance & almost never gets pulled up on

It's not really in the rules though. Not specifically.

Has been a pet peeve of mine for many years.

Lescott's today being a particularly bad one.

Ya I was so disgusted with him today. it made me remember why I was startying to hate him before.. there is no place for him in the team. Did nothing but dive and foul people all day.

Apart from force pretty much the only save Howard had to make today.

FIFA Rule 17.a - "Lescott cannot shield the ball from any Liverpool player"

Bloody typical, FIFA, the FA and the Premier League bending the rules for the blues****.

What the laws of the game do say is that you cannot impede or hold a player. Both of which you could interpret as happening when you see that kind of situation arise.

they covered it when I was doing my refs course & said the ball has to be w/i playing distance. This was yonks ago though, so I can't remember how specifically it's referred to in dem rules

It's not referred to explicitly in the laws of the game, you were just given interpretation and guidelines for that situation.

No place for him in the team? Aside from the fact that he has scored lots of goals and has plenty of assists too, I see your point.

If someone does it in midfield, it's a foul. Also, defenders are doing it when the ball is 10 yards from the line - that's not shielding, it's assault.
