For sure on top form he would certianly be an asset. I always thought he worked best in a 'free role' under Evans, usually the 3-5-2 behind Fowler and Collymore. On the right he'd roam and although effective going forward I wouldn't have liked to be the right back behind him.

He could run with the ball (which is something we lack) but I never thought his crossing was any good

well not for Liverpool

His goal against Celtic shows what we are missing now - someone who can run with the ball, commit defenders and force errors

as well as cross accurately ;)

Yeah a young McManaman would be great for the current team! As would a young Fowler.

Pennants I would have thought...

What and play 352? I don't think pennant or macca in his day would give enough protection in that formation. With someone like mcmanaman you need a right back behind him so you could only play 442 or 451, and 451 wouldn't be attacking enough at home imho

true we need a poacher like a Fowler or a Rush. Not something any of our forwards currenly give us that.

Mind you not many teams seem to play with someone who could be described as a 'goal poaching specialist' these days. The emphasis seems to be on the all-rounder types who score goals but dont necessaerily 'poach' if you know what I mean.

here we go again...

he didnt shaft the club..

we tried to sell him to barca behind his back......macca never wanted to leave us as i believe his mother was seriously ill at the time...he was then offered a certain package to stay, then macca went to agree to the conditions, yet we completely changed the package...he had no fecking choice but to leave.

Bad work by our men upstairs again...as seen by this deal and again with the owen mess

if we had macmanaman on top of his game, he would play on the right. Stevie, xabi and momo would just have to battle for central places, with momo being the odd one out I'd estimate.

He was a great player in his day.

Great player?

Biggest waste of talent ever. A truly gifted player who would pass backwards 9 times out of 10.

Used to pull my hair out when he had the ball. Was better than any opposition defenders at breaking up an attacking move or allowing time for the defence to get back.

One or two wonder moments do not make him a great player.

Everyone could see his potential but he never realised it. Damn frustrating and I was glad to see him go.
