my mum is nearly 60 years old and lived alone until my brother split up with his girl the other week, so now he's back there.. she had her windows put in last Saturday night (well, 4am-ish Sunday morning i should say) by two lads who shouted 'f*** Michael Shields you murdering b******s'.. and ran off shouting some Everton song (my brother heard them as he ran down the stairs with a gold club).. he ran out and they were well down the road but kicked the wing mirrors off a couple of cars who also had, as my mum did, 'Free Michael Shields' posters in the windows..

 

it makes me fkin sad that some people of Liverpool, his home city, bring his football allegiance into this terrible matter.. it honestly does..

The mistake here (in my mind) is that the Michael Shields trial has been made a football related issue when it is purely a diplomatic one - though I know why this has happened.

It was always going to be that way. A red getting put away for alleged football violence in europe + blues/mancs always giving it large about heysel etc + Large liverpool fanbase sticking together to prove his innocence = Blues and mancs using it as a taunt

Quite - I'm with you and Anny on this.

 

jack et al, the people or the city of Liverpool used to stick together through any adversity - but years of being told they are a bunch of self-pitying, sentimentalist losers has taken it's toll on a generation not perhaps as resolute in its convictions as its forebears. It's also like every other city, progressively become by degree more middle class and diasporic, when that happens, the bonds of unity start to slacken.

The 'friendly Derby' thing was always a myth I thought. It's got worse, but it was never as the media portrayed it.

 

Alot of things are never how the media portray it.

 

Especially the local media.

The 'friendly Derby' thing was always a myth I thought. It's got worse, but it was never as the media portrayed it.

 

I disagree there. The whole "Merseyside" thing was overblown and exagerated, mainly by the professional scouser brigade, but there was definitely a closer bond and less of an edge in our derby than in all the other local derbies around the country, especially during the eighties, which to me says a lot about how the city and it's people were portrayed during that time.

 

I remember standing in a jam packed Gwladys St with a few hundred other Reds and jumping up and down after we scored and not ever once feeling threatened, even with a big Blue docker standing five feet away. There's not many, if any, derbies around the world where that would happen.

 

It's changed now, obviously, it's become nasty and hate-filled, and some of the behaviour from our Blue scouse brothers has disgusted me, especially the abuse of Shields, but I'm not sure if it's down to a breakdown in basic social standards, or are they really just that bitter and twisted about us being the more succesful club in the city. If it's the latter I really feel sorry for them.
