It's silly season for the British press and it's being led by the Mail - never at the forefront of accurate sports reporting. In its club by club summary today, it says we've brought in two players (Gonzalez and Bellamy), not a mention of Aurelio, says we are after two players - Pennant and CAMORANESI - and tells us Arsenal, Chelsea, Man Utd, NEWCASTLE, PORTSMOUTH, SPURS AND WIGAN have a bigger transfer budget that we have. As if they would know. According to them we are on a par with Everton and Middlesbro. I'm storing this away as they very kindly gave the reporter's email address..... :D

Portsmouth probably do have a biggers transfer budget that us. It's getting quality players to sign for them thats the problem at the moment - same for Wigan - who have lots of dosh.

Newcastle have outspent us for years. This may well be the one time they don't.

Everton have spent over £30 mill in the last 18 months, so if we have a similar budget to them - we're probably doing ok :D

Spurs have already spent £18 million squid this summer, so seem to have lots of dosh.

Mail is full of s****, but I don't get why all that is so funny

It lists the signings as main ins, and it never pretends it is a definitive list. Bellamy and Gonzales have been our two main signings so far, so I would agree with that. Obviously Aurelio on a free and an up and coming Paletta will hopefully prove their worth too.

It says we are after another striker and a right winger, so again I'd agree with that. As for the targets and budget we have, I don't think anyone knows the definitive answer, so that is speculative.

It was a typical general transfer piece with a run down of the Prem clubs containing a large dose of speculation. No big deal, and not particularly worse than most other papers at this time.

I would say it's a given that all those clubs have a bigger net transfer outlay than us this summer. No surprise there, but it does make you wonder how the 5 times Champions of Europe have less money to spend than most of those teams, if not all of them.

This post isn't funny, it's bloody sad. :(

Aren't Portsmouth about to be bought out by a guy who is only just less rich than Abramovich???

Let's look at net sales league position at the end of the transfer window season shall we.

Posted

I'm betting we will - two of those were bought last season and one of ther others didn't cost a fee.

This thread isn't about the quality of player though - it's about how much net spend clubs have. Methinks you are going off topic.

As for GH - the comment was in response to you cracking a (nasty)joke at my expense. Nothing wrong with that, but don't iopen a can of worms that you can't shut Ivan.

I think you're taking Makavelli Smith's post seriously there, not mine. You'd already replied to my original, David.

Back on topic - the thread is about money but the money only matters if you use it well, so the quailty of player is on topic unless anyone thinks paying for another Diao, Diouf and Cissé at this stage is a good idea.

I'm pretty sure only Gonzalez was bought out of last seasons budget.

BNope, Paletta was bought out of last season's also.

The topic is about transfer budgets of various clubs, nothing else.

I'm not taking anything seriously, just saying people in glass houses.......

But that's off-topic for this thread Guz isn't it??

Source ?

Given his contract would've probably started on 1st July - surely he counts in this summer's budget.

As our accounts (if I remember correctly) run from August to August (end of July), techinically they would all be this years.

Signed in Feb

what's your point, gravy?

that other clubs could well spend more than us this summer but end up with lesser quality signings?

My only point is staying on topic that these clubs very well may have more money to spend net, that is all. We obviously have the upper hand in quality of signing because of who we are and who our manager is.

The theoretical question is, imagine the player Rafa could bring in, and the team he could build if he did indeed have more money to spend.

That is all. :)

Given the source of the original post I'm struggling to find any relevance or facts at all. ;)

i don't see your point. we've made four excellent, excellent signings for a total outlay of about £11m. why would we want to spunk that £11m on say, dimitar berbatov, when we can pick up craig bellamy for £6m and then get three quality south americans in as well?

I think it's pretty much a given that if Rafa had 12 million to spend and not the 6 he did on Bellamy, then we may have found ourselves with a different striker than Bellamy. We have to cut our cloth accordingly that's all. We are just fortunate to have a manager who is an expert in doing so.

The Mail today has quoted the team's budgets ....

Arsenal - 25 million.

Aston Villa - None .

Blackburn - 10 million.

Bolton - 10 million.

Charllton - 5 million.

Chelsea - Limitless.

Everton - 15 million.

Fulham - 8 million.

Liverpool - 15 million.

Man City - 10 million.

Man UTD - 30 million.

Boro - 15 million.

Newcastle - 20 million.

Pompy - 45 million.

Reading - 10 million.

Sheff UTD - 7 million.

Spurs - 20 million.

Watford - 5 million.

West Ham - 8 million.

Wigan - 30 million

is this guesswork or does the mail journalist ring the respective chairman and ask them all the pertinent questions. Besides which if we appear skint we are less likely to be fleeced - or so the theory would go

Nobody in this thread knows how much money Rafa has got to spend and I couldn't give two sh*ts how much other clubs have got to spend.

not if we are constantly outbid in the market by clubs desperate to get on a par with us

I agree kinda of but say we had 10 million to spend and every other club had 1000m it would drive up the price of players making our 10m look small. So it is important what other clubs budget is.
