Parry calls for use of fourth sub

Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry could suggest to football's governing bodies that teams be allowed to use a fourth substitute in extra time.

At present only three replacements are allowed during a match - with no concession for the added-on 30 minutes.

Parry came up with the idea after Liverpool beat West Ham in the FA Cup final after 120 minutes plus penalties.

"Here's a thought for the future, maybe a fourth substitute to be allowed in extra time," he told Radio Five Live.

"It would make it less of a lottery."

Several Liverpool players, including captain Steven Gerrard, were struck by cramp in extra time while West Ham striker Marlon Harewood was injured and unable to put any weight on one leg.

"Maybe the issue should be raised with the Football Association," said Parry.

"Poor Marlon Harewood played so well in the 90 minutes but was a passenger at the end. That's no way to decide big games."

Harewood might have won the Cup for West Ham at the death but the ball fell to his injured foot and he sliced wide.

However, Parry feels reintroducing a replay for the final is unrealistic.

"Looking at the calendar, I think we've gone beyond that now," he said.

"Penalty shoot-outs are nerve-jangling and you always feel sorry for the losers but at the end of the day, they produce fantastic drama, talking points and entertainment.

"I think we have to accept finishing it on the day - but it's cruel after two sides have given their all for 90 minutes."

That's the American in you talking ;)

Penalties are a part of football. Horrible way to lose but that's because you've lost - what is a ' nice ' way to lose, anyway ? Rock, paper, scissors ? Shoot pontoon ?

Penalties are grrreat.

me think a sub has to be used because of injury.

i was sorry for harrewood because he had a great game but it was pardew's fault.

he should have been more clever with his substitutions.

call me a traditionnalist if you like.

(pens are only great for the neutral & when you win on them)

Fair observation.

But, here's why I hate penalties. I was at the world cup final in LA in 94. I was right where they were taking the pens. I thought after two years and hundreds of matches, and the world watching, it was a horrible way to decide it all. It wasn't football at all. And, two great players get to be the goat for the rest of their lives after great acreers.

It just seemed dead wrong to me.

Sure it is - it's which team is PSYCHOLOGICALLY tougher - very much part of the game.

Also, pennos are great because when people miss, it's nice to see them cry (in an emotional they care sort of way) like Anton Ferdinand yesterday - he was distraught - shows emotion :)

i still dont understand how people can call penaltys a lottery..

Surely the team with the best pen takers and keeper wins?!?!?? so in my book the winners of the shoot out deserve it...yes? no?

people have known about the penalty situation for years,if clubs and international sides(hello england) dont practice them in training...then its ya own fault.

Penalties are brilliant.

Not good for the heart or anything, but you surely wouldn't swap them for a replay or something equally rubbish. Nothing better to watch as a neutral, either. And there's nothing really in football that tests calmness under pressure as much and gives keepers the chance to be such heroes.

Bit harsh on Pardew. he wasn't to know Harewood would be crocked, and made the changes he felt necessary to try and win the game

i agree.

is it irrelevant to replay the match 3 or 4 days ago.

after all,it's a world cup final,it makes sense to be replayed doesn't it?

Penalties are the very soul of football - Man, Ball, Keeper. You can't get more basic than that, it takes the games back to a simpler age everyone can identify with - playing the game with your brother against the garage. UEFA has talked off it not being fair - nonsense. What's next - both teams win and share the cup?
