Bobby Murdoch netted the other. Debuting between the sticks 2012 – Brazilian custodian Alexander Doni played the first of his four reds games as Aston Villa held us to a 1-1 draw at Anfield. This game launched Emlyn Hughes’ nickname of Crazy Horse after he rugby tackled United forward Albert Bennett in only his fifth reds match. Heading towards Basel 2016 – We held Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund to a 1-1 draw in their Signal Iduna Park in the first leg of our UEFA Europa League Quarter-final. Divock Origi handed us a half-time lead, but Mats Hummels headed in soon after the break. Al off the mark 2007 - Our first ever game at Reading ended in a 2-1 win. Full-back Álvaro Arbeloa raced most of the length of the pitch to notch his first reds goal as we reached 200 League points under Rafael Benítez. Dirk Kuyt headed a late winner after Brynjar Gunnarsson had drawn the home side level. Bashing the Hammers 1984 - We trounced West Ham United 6-0 at Anfield. Ian Rush and Graeme Souness both netted twice, with Kenny Dalglish bagging his 150th reds goal and Ronnie Whelan also on target as we went 4-0 up inside half an hour. Most recently 2024 – We drew 2-2 at Manchester United as Luis Díaz bagged the only goal of a dominant first half. After the break, Jarell Quansah passed straight to Bruno Fernandes, who scored past stranded keeper Caoimhin Kelleher from inside the centre circle. Kobbie Mainoo put the home side ahead but Mohamed Salah levelled with a late penalty. Cottaged by Elton’s cousin 1956 - Roy Dwight scored a hat-trick for Fulham in their 3-1 Second Division win over us at Craven Cottage, the first of his four goals past us. Roy’s cousin Reg later went on to great fame and fortune, under the name of Elton John. Billy Liddell netted our consolation, while winger Joe Dickson played his sixth and final reds game and keeper Dave Underwood appeared for the fiftieth and last time. On a roll 1979 - We secured the third of five straight League wins, all without conceding, as we beat Arsenal 3-0 at Anfield. Jimmy Case, Kenny Dalglish and Terry McDermott all struck in the second half to wipe out the bad memories of losing an FA Cup Semi-final replay to Manchester United three days earlier. This was Phil Thompson’s first game as reds skipper. 1951 - We also beat the Gunners in a top-flight meeting, with Albert Stubbins and Jimmy Payne scoring in a 2-1 win at Highbury, with Cliff Holton nabbing the first of his four goals against the reds as Payne reached a century of League outings for the reds in what was our 2,000th official game. Derby disappointment 2018 – We were held to a goalless draw by Everton in a drab Goodison encounter. 1917 - We were beaten 4-0 at Goodison Park in a Wartime League match. International debutants 1900 - Alex Raisbeck won the first of his eight Scotland caps as they thumped England 4-1 at Celtic Park in the British International Championships. 1965 - Tommy Smith made his debut for England Under-23’s in their goalless encounter with Czechoslovakia at Elland Road. 1906 - Billy Dunlop won his only Scottish cap as they won 2-1 in the same fixture at Hampden Park. Clubmate Raisbeck was his skipper that day, while ex-reds inside-right George Livingstone also debuted in this game, winning his only cap as a Manchester City player. Red endings 1947 - Wing-half Tom Bush played his 69th and final reds game, over thirteen years after his debut. We beat Preston North End 3-0 as we closed in on our fifth League title, with Albert Stubbins grabbing two and Jack Balmer also on target. Bush later joined the reds’ coaching staff. Keeper Ray Minshull saved a penalty taken by the visitors’ Bill Shankly. 1955 – Winger Harold Uren died. He joined the reds as an amateur in April 1906, turning out 45 times and notching twice before joining Everton in February 1912 for £300 with forward Billy Lacey and centre-forward Tommy Gracie heading in the opposite direction. A win at Old Trafford 1982 - A goal from Craig Johnston was enough to beat Manchester United. Bruce Grobbelaar saved an early Frank Stapleton penalty, being helped by seeing a picture of him converting a previous spot-kick in the programme before the match! Win, lose and draw against the Blues We have played Birmingham City three times in the top-flight on this day over the years, with varying degrees of success. 1939 - Berry Nieuwenhuys and Jack Balmer scored a brace apiece as we thumped City 4-0 at Anfield. 1923 – We were held to a goalless draw, also at home. 1973 - A Tommy Smith goal was not enough as we went down 2-1 at St. Andrews, with Emlyn Hughes sent off in the final minute, although he later successfully appealed the dismissal. Future Blues forward Bob Latchford netted one of his five goals against us, with Bob Hatton bagging the first of his four past us while left-back Alec Lindsay reached a century of League games for the reds. Mixed fortunes against the Clarets We have faced Burnley three times on this day in history, winning only once and losing twice. 1900 - We lost 1-0 at Anfield, with ex-reds forward Abe Hartley on target. Sam Raybould had a penalty saved for the reds. 1950 - We won another First Division meeting 2-0 at Turf Moor thanks to goals from Jimmy Payne and Billy Liddell. 1919 - Our Wartime League match ended in a 5-3 away defeat, with Rob Matthews netting twice and Harold Wadsworth also on target. Also recently 2013 – West Ham United held us to a goalless League draw at Anfield, with a Daniel Sturridge strike wrongly ruled out for offside. Oussama Assaidi played his twelfth and last reds game. Up against the Terriers 1928 - We won a top-flight match 4-2 at Huddersfield Town, with Jimmy Walsh bagging his 27th and final reds goal. Tommy Reid, Gordon Hodgson and Dick Edmed grabbing our other goals, with Alex Jackson nabbing the first two of his four goals against us. 1962 - We were held to a 1-1 draw in our other meeting on this day in history on our way to the Second Division title. Roger Hunt netted for the reds at Anfield that day. Beating City We have twice defeated Manchester City on this day in history. 1954 - Brian Jackson struck twice as we won a top-flight encounter 2-0 at Maine Road. 1945 - Don Welsh bagged a brace with Billy Liddell also on the scoresheet as we won a Wartime League match at Anfield 3-0 that also counted for the Wartime League Cup. Milestone goals 1958 - Forward Bobby Murdoch bagged his seventh and final reds goal as we beat Stoke City 3-0 at Anfield in a Second Division encounter. He only played five more times before joining Barrow in September 1959. Billy Liddell scored the other goals, one of them from the spot. 1934 – We drew 2-2 at West Bromwich Albion. We fell two goals behind at the break to a Jock Carter strike and then the first of Teddy Sandford’s five goals against the reds. Vic Wright scored his first goal with Gordon Hodgson also netting in the second half. Management moves 2009 – Assistant Secretary Ian Silvester was appointed Club Secretary, following the death of Bryce Morrison the previous month. On the same day, ex-reserves midfielder David Mannix was charged with breaching the FA’s betting rules while playing for Chester City. He was later banned for ten months and fined £4,000. 2017 – Ex-reds boss Brendan Rodgers signed a new four-year contract with Celtic, having already led them to the League Cup and title since taking charge in May 2016. He left for Leicester City in February 2019. Harry on the move 2013 – Left-winger Harry Kewell signed for Al-Gharafa, in the Qatar Stars League. He struck once in three games before returning to Australia to sign for Melbourne Heart. In trouble 2015 - Ex-reds left-back Andrea Dossena was arrested on suspicion of shoplifting from Harrods, although no further action was taken. Also in international action 1894 – Future red Edgar Chadwick featured as England drew 2-2 with Scotland in the British International Championships at Celtic Park. 1976 – Future red Kenny Dalglish played for Scotland in their 1-0 friendly defeat of Switzerland at Hampden Park. 1987 – Future red Stig Inge Bjørnebye played for Norway Under-19’s as they lost a tournament game 5-1 to Hungary in Poland. 2004 – Jordan Holmes played for England Under-16’s as they lost 1-0 to the Ivory Coast in the Montaigu Tournament. 2007 – Future red Nikola Sarić played for Denmark Under-16’s as they beat Castelo Branco Under-18’s in Portugal.

Farewells to legends 1991 - Alan Hansen retired through injury. He had signed from Partick Thistle for £100,000 in May 1977 and made 620 reds appearances, notching fourteen times and helping us to claim three European Cups, eight League titles, two FA Cups, three League Cups and four FA Charity Shields. 2021 – Scottish forward Ian St. John died. He joined from his hometown club Motherwell in May 1961 for a then club record fee of £37,500. The Saint scored 118 goals in 425 games for the reds, including the winning goal in the 1965 FA Cup Final, also helping us to win two First Division titles, the Second Division and FA Charity Shield, before moving to South Africa in February 1971 to join Hellenic. Triple treble This day has brought three reds hat-tricks. 1902 - Sam Raybould netted a treble in our very first senior game on this day, a 4-0 home League win over Manchester City, with Jack Cox adding the other. 1930 - We faced City again, losing a top-flight encounter at Maine Road 4-3, with Jim Smith, Archie McPherson and Gordon Hodgson on the scoresheet. Eric Brook bagged one of his nine goals against the reds, with Tommy Tait nabbing the last two of his four against us and future Blue Tommy Johnson netting one of his eight past us. 1947 - Albert Stubbins grabbed three including a full-length diving header along the icy pitch in a 4-1 FA Cup Sixth Round win over Birmingham City at Anfield, with Jack Balmer also on target. This was the first all-ticket game staged in the city, only going ahead after a mid-morning pitch inspection. We were knocked out by Burnley in the Semi-final that season after a replay. 1919 - Tom Miller struck a hat-trick as we thumped Bury 6-0 in a Wartime League match at Anfield. Rob Matthews and Donald McKinlay were also on target, with Harry Lewis converting a penalty. 1941 - We also beat the Shakers in another Wartime League fixture as we won 5-2 at Gigg Lane, thanks to braces from Billy Liddell and Dicky Dorsett and a Cyril Done strike. For Sammy 1988 - We played in a testimonial match for Sammy Lee, beating Club Atlético Osasuna 2-0 at their Estadio El Sadar. Kenny Dalglish and Ray Houghton scored the goals, but unfortunately Sammy himself could not play due to injury. 1894 – We beat Newton Heath, as Manchester United were then known, 3-0 in a friendly at Anfield in aid of Stanley Hospital. Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw, Douglas Dick and Arthur Worgan all netted. Most recently 2023 – Wolverhampton Wanderers lost 2-0 at Anfield, with Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah both on target late on. 2015 - We beat Manchester City 2-1 with Jordan Henderson scoring before Edin Džeko equalised for the visitors with one of his five goals past us to date. Philippe Coutinho struck the winner. 2014 - We won 3-0 at Southampton, with Luis Suárez and substitute Raheem Sterling on target before Steven Gerrard converted a last-minute penalty, his tenth consecutive success from the spot, while future red Adam Lallana hit the woodwork as Suárez reached a century of League outings for the reds. Reds farewells 1958 - Outside-right Brian Jackson played his 133rd and last reds game as we lost an FA Cup Sixth Round tie 2-1 at Blackburn Rovers, with Bobby Murdoch netting our goal. 1962 - Inside-right Fred Pagnam died. He signed for the reds from Blackpool in May 1914, and so could only bag thirty goals in 39 reds games before joining Arsenal in October 1919, with whom he kept up his remarkable strike-rate. Happy birthday Djimi 1980 - Djimi Traoré was born in Saint Ouen. He signed for the reds from Stade Lavallois Mayenne for just £550,000 in February 1999, and struck once in 141 reds games, helping us to claim the Champions League in 2005. He joined Charlton Athletic for £2m in August 2006, but moved on again just five months later, this time to Portsmouth, before returning to French football. Reds debutants 1989 - Mike Marsh made his reds debut in our 2-0 home League victory over Charlton Athletic, when Peter Beardsley struck for the first time in eighteen matches, later added to by a John Aldridge penalty past ex-reds reserves keeper Bob Bolder. This was our first home fixture in six weeks. 1952 - Left-winger Mervyn Jones and defender George Whitworth both debuted in our 1-1 top-flight draw at Fulham. Jimmy Payne scored before Charlie Mitten converted a spot-kick, the last of his five goals against us. In Europe We have twice travelled overseas for first leg European matches on this day in history, both times returning the happier of the two teams. 1978 - We won 2-1 at SL Benfica in the European Cup Third Round, with Jimmy Case converting a free-kick and Emlyn Hughes netting in torrential rain after we had gone behind. This was Benfica’s first defeat in 47 games as Nené struck the first of his three goals against us for the Eagles. 1966 - We returned from Honvéd with a goalless draw in the first leg of our Second Round match in the European Cup Winners’ Cup on as we edged a step closer to the Final. An unhappy century 1924 – Forward Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers bagged his hundredth reds goal as we lost 3-1 at Arsenal in a top-flight fixture as right-half Jock McNab reached a century of reds games. Harry Woods scored two of his five goals past us, with Jock Rutherford netting the last of his six against the reds. Dixie dies 1980 – Legendary Blues forward Dixie Dean died from a heart attack after attending our 2-1 win at Goodison. Ex-Blue David Johnson scored, added to by a controversial Phil Neal penalty, with Peter Eastoe scoring one of his four goals against us. Ex-reds boss Bill Shankly was also in attendance at this match. Harry’s only strike 1913 – Forward Harry Welfare bagged his only reds goal in our 2-1 defeat of Derby County at Anfield, with Billy Lacey grabbing the other goal. Horace Barnes netted the first of his nine strikes past us. Peake’s debut 1909 - Ernest Peake won his first Welsh cap, alongside team-mate Maurice Parry, as they beat Scotland 3-2 in Wrexham in the British International Championships. England scorers off the mark 2006 - Peter Crouch struck his first goal for his country in England’s 2-1 friendly defeat of Uruguay at Anfield, with future red Joe Cole nabbing the other and Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard both also featuring. Crouch was wearing a shirt with the number twelve on the back but 21 on the front! 1967 - Tommy Smith bagged the first of his two goals for England Under-23’s, converting a penalty as they lost 3-1 to Scotland at St. James’ Park. Clubmate Chris Lawler also played. Jari the record-breaker 2006 - Ex-red Jari Litmanen broke Finland’s all-time appearance record, overtaking Arj Hjelm, when he was captain as he won his 101st cap as Roy Hodgson’s side beat Belarus 5-4 on penalties after their Cyprus Tournament Third-place play-off had ended 2-2 in Larnaca. Sami Hyypiä was playing his 75th game for his country. In charge 1981 - Larry Lloyd was appointed Manager of basement side Wigan Athletic. He was in charge at Springfield Park for two years, leading them to promotion in his one full season in charge. 2006 - Steve Staunton took charge of his first game as Republic of Ireland Manager, guiding them to a 3-0 friendly defeat of Sweden at Lansdowne Road, with future red Robbie Keane on target. Other reds games 1975 – Chelsea held us to a 2-2 draw at Anfield as we fell behind to an Ian Britton strike before Steve Heighway equalised in the first half. Steve Finnieston scored the first of his four goals past us, but Peter Cormack nabbed a late leveller. 1969 – Our FA Cup Fifth Round tie at Leicester City ended goalless. The game had to be played on Sixth Round day following seven postponements due to the weather, but we lost the Anfield replay two days later. Fernando again 2010 - Fernando Torres retained the Liverpool Echo’s Sports Personality Of The Year award. Also in international friendly action 2006 - Paul Jones won his first cap as a Queens Park Rangers player and Craig Bellamy made his final appearance while with Blackburn Rovers as John Toshack’s Wales were held to a goalless draw by Paraguay at the Millennium Stadium. Fernando Morientes won his final cap as a reds player in Spain’s 3-2 defeat of the Ivory Coast, with Xabi Alonso, Luis García and future red Fernando Torres also playing. Dirk Kuyt struck for the last time as a Feyenoord player, notching the only goal as the Netherlands faced Ecuador in Amsterdam. Nicolas Anelka won his last cap as a Fenerbahçe Spor Kulübü player as future red Martin Škrtel’s Slovakia beat France 2-1 in the Stade de France, with fellow ex-red Alou Diarra also in action. Jerzy Dudek, John Arne Riise, future reds Yossi Benayoun, Philipp Degen, Sotirios Kyrgiakos, Christian Poulsen and Nuri Şahin, ex-red Milan Baroš and future reds youngsters Michael Collins and Shane O'Connor also played for their countries that day. 2012 - Ragnar Klavan captained Estonia for the first time and scored his only goal as an AZ Alkmaar player while winning his 76th cap in their 2-0 friendly defeat of El Salvador in California. On the move 2013 – Swedish left-winger Alexander Kačaniklić joined Burnley on loan from Fulham, playing six times for the Clarets. 2012 – Ex-reds reserves winger Adam Hammill joined Middlesbrough on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers, turning out ten times without scoring. 1996 - Gary Ablett joined Sheffield United on loan from Everton. He played twelve times for the Blades, before being sold to Birmingham City that summer. 1983 - Peter Beardsley re-signed for Vancouver Whitecaps on a free transfer from Manchester United. He spent six months there in his second spell, before returning to England to join Newcastle United.
