It has a lot to do with tax hikes etc, IMO. Alonso said in South Africa that the new tax increase would take his pay down a third and the decline in sterling wouldn't help. Not only that, he predicted that he would not be the only foreign player leaving these shores when the legislation comes in. How accurate he is on that, only time will tell.

Can someone tell me where this Ribery story emerged? Was it the Daily Mail report which gave it legs? If so, they've knocked down their own report anyway! If this Ribery story gets more currency in the press, maybe Man Utd will suddenly make a move for him with some of the dosh they've got swishing around. Mind you, they're also reported to have offered Berbatov as a makeweight for Aguero! As someone on here said, it is certainly quieter on the transfer front for us this close season and it looks to me like the press are getting increasingly desperate for news. Far as I'm concerned, no news is good news.

Right. And do you think we are going to start now? I have difficulty thinking of any successful makeweights for any other club in the league, let alone Liverpool. Doubtless someone on here can come up with a player who came up trumps....?

Well, that is true enough. He won't be paying 50 percent tax over there, that's for sure. But you and I both know that there is a way round that! I don't know what to think about this Alonso business. All I do know is that Rafa was confident we would make the final push this coming season for the Championship. If Alonso goes, that takes the wind out of our sails, IMO. No-one is indispensable but damned if I can see anyone willing to come to Anfield who can take his place. And if we go for anyone half-decent, clubs will jack up their asking price, knowing we have some serious wonga available (assuming he goes for 30 million).
