its just an observation, but for me Finnan definately contributes more going forward when Gerrard plays on the right. I take your point about Pennant hugging the touchline leaving less space to overlap, and equally opponents probably fear gerrard more, but still , staying wide creates more space for the fullback to exploit in the inside right channel but finnan rarely makes those runs. Its a situation that time will resolve as finnan and pennant figure out each others games a little more.

I think he's much more effective when Gerrard is playing outside right. He doesn't have the confidence that if he overlaps Pennant there will provide cover for him. With Gerrard he seems much more comfortable to go further forward knowing that the team wont get caught out of shape. I also think this is why Pennant looks ineffective at times; he is often up against two players because they don't have to worry about the full back.
