Have to agree with Rushian here. If anything we've achieved far more historically buying what I would call "mid-range" quality 'names' or up and coming youngsters (e.g. Hansen - 100k, Whelan - Free) with the odd indulgence (Barnes, Lawrenson, Beardo) - the key ingredient has always been hunger, desire and workrate. Not price. You could add players like McMahon and Wark, both highly underrated but talismen in our teams of the past. They cost a combined figure of 800k, which was at least 250k less than what the Mancs payed for Peter 'Barn Door' Davenport, iirc. From my memory it was always the Mancs that splashed out on the flavours of the month with the headline-grabbing fees (Gary Birtles, Danny Wallace and who could forget Neil Webb ). Their list of big money flops is superb ! I fact when you weight it up, particularly in recent years we've been burnt a hell of a lot by signing players for "big juicy" fees rather than those at the cheaper end of the market.
