If I remember correctly, recently our entire scouting system has been replaced, getting rid of 80 year old semi pros and replacing them with a smaller group (12?) of professional scouts, similar to the medic issue discussed in another thread, the club has for a long time been a shambles and it takes time to modernise.

The point i was trying to make is that we have no pace outwide, so if we get caught short on the counter, we're f***ed.

I think you need to play two holding midfielders when your team has no pace. So when we're playing Kuyt & Carra on the wings, if we get caught on the counter attack there's no way to recover. The presence of Lucas and Macherano playing together, and both playing 'defensively', is not necessarily the problem in itself; it's indicative of the problem, which is we have no pace, no width and no presence up front. I'm not sure that if we still had alonso it would make much difference in the games we've been dire, as there would be no one for him to pass the ball to.
