"Stevie, i want you in the midfield three but i don't want you to worry about using your energy tracking back - as i said, leave that to Lucas and Jordan okay?.. i want your position to be the one that gets the ball off those two and helps to start off the attacking threat, as i said keep it moving forwards okay? get it to Phil, get it to Luis, get it to Daniel.. get up there and score a couple too.. as i said, keep it moving forwards okay?".. i've had this conversation with a fella in work who's saying "Lucas isn't cutting the mustard for me... what do we need defensive midfielders for anyway? a midfielder is a midfielder.. their job is to help the defence and then help the attack.. thats the role".. i don't know how he can say that really because the likes of Lucas & Gerrard are better at one thing than the other - Lucas at the defensive side and Stevie at the attacking side and we know he's got a finish in him too.. so use them in the area they're best at..

used to prefer being at height to see the space etc.. used to love to see the space and a ball being put through.. wonderful.. but being closer to the action now is quality.. you notice the speed of the game more.. seeing/hearing a good tackle is boss too..

don't really think Lucas is the problem in that midfield two but he's doing too much running, particularly first half, and as a result he's looking knackered later in the game - and so far this season thats the time when we've been under most pressure.. i saw him bombing past Gerrard loads on Saturday so maybe he's just using energy tracking back for the skipper.. Gerrard on the other hand doesn't look right..

my brother in law was away with them for pre-season and said every day after the players had finished training he'd get all the coaching staff out and just run or, if no track, he'd get them in the gym on the treadmills.. he strikes me as the type who'd want to improve his appearance/fitness in line with the job he has.. fit body = fit mind an all that..

despite looking better in the second half of last season, if i remember correctly, had the season started in January we'd have still only been sixth in the league.. so still not good enough for where we want to be (winning the league or, at worst, in the top four).. a lot of the 'progress' mentioned is overstated in my opinion mainly due to the fact that Sturridge and Coutinho come in and hit the ground running and therefore made things look much better.. saying that, i think during the latter stages of the season and certainly early on in this it looks like Rodgers has grown into the role and - although i've always liked him and wanted him to do well (obviously that bit goes without saying) - i can really see him taking this team on.. i'm very settled with him now, it looks like he's brought great unity to the squad and i wouldn't swap him for any other manager right now.. there will be a few bumps in the road this season but i'm now confident he'll work them out.. he's boss..
