  3. Daniel Sturridge to have Liverpool FC medical ahead of £12m transfer By James Pearce Dec 22 2012 DANIEL STURRIDGE is set to undergo a medical tomorrow as he prepares to make a £12million move to Liverpool FC. The Reds are ready to complete the deal with Chelsea after a dispute with the striker's representatives was resolved. It emerged earlier this week that a fee had been agreed with the Londoners for the 23-year-old frontman but there was a problem over the cash demands of his agent. LFC boss Brendan Rodgers was always confident the issues would be sorted out but warned the club wouldn't be held to ransom. He was prepared to walk away from the deal and had lined up Paris Saint Germain striker Kevin Gameiro as an alternative option. However, an agreement has now been reached and Sturridge is expected on Merseyside on Sunday to have his medical. It's unlikely there will be any official confirmation of Sturridge's move to Anfield until after the transfer window opens on January 1. Sturridge, who has four England caps, has scored 24 goals in 49 starts and 47 substitute appearances since his arrival from Manchester City in the summer of 2009. He enjoyed a successful loan spell at Bolton in the 2010/11 season when he netted eight times in 12 games. http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/liverpool-fc/liverpool-fc-news/2012/12/22/daniel-sturridge-to-have-liverpool-fc-medical-ahead-of-12m-transfer-100252-32482239/

  13. Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins says no approach has been made from Liverpool to speak to manager Brendan Rodgers. 14. Liverpool insist they have yet to give Martínez the thumbs-up Rory Smith Updated 33 minutes ago Liverpool have denied claims that they have made a formal offer to Roberto Martínez to succeed Kenny Dalglish at Anfield, although more talks will be held with the Wigan Athletic manager next week. Dave Whelan, the Wigan chairman, said yesterday that discussions between Martínez and John W. Henry, the Merseyside club’s principal owner, in Miami had resulted in a concrete proposal. Martínez has returned to Barbados after meeting Henry in Florida. Whelan described the conversations yesterday as “constructive,” suggesting that Henry had put an offer to the Wigan manager and that Martínez — who wants complete control over transfers — would give a final answer when further talks are held in London on Tuesday. “Roberto has had a constructive meeting with Liverpool,” Whelan told ESPN. “He is now back at my home in Barbados. He returns to London on Tuesday, when he will have further talks with Liverpool and when a decision will be made. There was no other manager mentioned, so I imagine they want Roberto. “I don’t want to lose him, but I made him a promise when he first joined that if a big club came in for him, I’d let him go, and I will honour that promise. “I am still not convinced it is a foregone conclusion, because they put their points on the table and Roberto put his. He listened to their points, but I think they also listened to his and I think they are coming to terms with the way English football is run. Roberto wants control over football matters and that includes transfers, and if they agree to that, I can see him becoming the Liverpool manager.” Fenway Sports Group (FSG), Liverpool’s parent company, said that it had held constructive conversations with the Spaniard, but insisted that there is no formal offer. That FSG is expected to meet with as few as three potential candidates, though, proves how highly Martínez is regarded within Anfield’s hierarchy. It is an esteem that Whelan, naturally, shares. “Roberto works seven days a week, sometimes 12 hours a day,” the Wigan chairman said. “He is not the average manager, but he likes to run the football side and I can see Liverpool’s point of view about the amount of money spent on players. If they agree to let Roberto take responsibility for the transfers, I think he will go there, and I can see that Liverpool have set their sights on him.” Martínez’s chief competition for the post appears to be Brendan Rodgers, the Swansea City manager, despite the Northern Irishman’s refusal to be put through an interview process. FSG has been impressed with the job he has accomplished and have not discounted him from their search. André Villas-Boas, the former Chelsea and Porto manager, has also been considered, but it is believed that Liverpool’s interest in the Portuguese has cooled in recent days. Links to the likes of Fabio Capello and Harry Redknapp are wide of the mark, FSG being keen to recruit a younger manager. Rafael Benítez, the club’s former manager, has not been approached. Bert van Marwijk and Joachim Löw, of Holland and Germany respectively, are also thought to be under consideration. Whoever is appointed is likely to have to work within a novel management structure expected to feature a technical and a sporting director, although official titles have not been crystallised. Louis van Gaal, the former Ajax and Barcelona coach, is the front-runner for one of those posts, with Pep Segura, a Benítez appointment who has overseen a revamp of the club’s academy, expected to be promoted to a similar role at first-team level. http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/sport/...cle3426535.ece
  15. Matt_Lawton_DM: Think Mr Whelan has been a bit premature. Martinez has not been offered the Liverpool job. Well not yet anyway.
  16. André Villas-Boas in line for talks at Liverpool Tony Barrett Published 1 minute ago André Villas-Boas has indicated that he will need convincing that the managerial vacancy at Liverpool is the right opportunity for him, an assertion that contradicts suggestions that the Portuguese is desperate to take over from Kenny Dalglish. Liverpool are expected to interview Villas-Boas this week as their search for a new manager intensifies but it appears that they will have to win over the 34-year-old as much as he will need to impress them. Having seen his reputation damaged by a bruising eight-month spell as Chelsea manager, Villas-Boas has committed himself to doing everything in his power to ensure that his next career move is the right one. Although Liverpool are a sufficiently attractive proposition for him to hear what Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the club’s owner, has to say, it seems that it is anything but a foregone conclusion that he would take the job if offered it. Speaking before yesterday’s Portuguese Cup final between Académica and Sporting Lisbon, Villas-Boas took the opportunity to congratulate Chelsea on their Champions League success while also admitting that he has yet to decide which project is right for him. “The biggest award is to win the Champions League,” Villas-Boas said. “Congratulations to [Roberto] Di Matteo and the players. I’m still choosing the right project and that decision will take the necessary time.” Liverpool have already received permission to speak to Roberto Martínez about the possibility of him becoming their third managerial appointment in less than two years. Discussions have yet to begin, however, and it is understood that Martínez will depart the UK for a family holiday today. With reports in France suggesting that Didier Deschamps has no wish to be considered for the position owing to his contentment at Marseilles, it appears that Liverpool’s pursuit of a new manager is still some way from drawing to a successful conclusion. Against the ongoing backdrop of uncertainty, several Liverpool players are seeking assurances about what the future holds. Chief among them is Dirk Kuyt, who is ready to reconsider his decision to leave the club this summer if a manager is appointed who is willing to offer him regular playing time. The Holland forward became frustrated over his role in the Liverpool team and was ready to consider offers from clubs on the Continent when the transfer window opens on July 1. The departure of Dalglish, however, has encouraged Kuyt to await the arrival of a new manager before going ahead with his plans to leave. “I hope I can stay with Liverpool,” Kuyt said. “With Dalglish as manager, I didn’t have the impression he would let me start from the beginning next season. We have to wait and see now. I’m not sure yet what Liverpool will do with this manager vacancy.” Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger are also involved in contract negotiations, which are being conducted by Ian Ayre, the managing director. http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/sport/football/premierleague/article3420652.ece
