http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/liverpool-f...00252-22380203/ GEORGE Gillett today visited Anfield for the first time since September. The reasons for his surprise visit are unclear but Liverpool's co-owner spent several hours at the stadium before leaving this afternoon. Gillett was last in Liverpool three months ago for the Reds clash with Manchester United. On that occasion, the American watched the game from the directors box and he is expected to take in tonight's match between Liverpool and West Ham. Meanwhile, reports today emerged in the USA suggesting Gillett is struggling to refinance $75m of personal debt. The Sports Business Journal claims Gillett borrowed the money from Mill Financial in January this year and is due to be repaid next month. The report also claims that Springfield Financial Company, which Mill Financial is a branch of, is trying to sell the debt and there has been interest in it from at least one suitor who is interested in acquiring Gillett's stake in Liverpool Football Club. The Journal believes Gillett himself is trying to buy the debt with the help of investors.

And the Blanquiazules director has hinted The Toffees have made a decent offer for Riera, but the player would rather join city rivals Reds, who need to improve their bid. "There is a team which is offering what we have asked and another one which isn't, but the player is interested in the one which is offering the least," Herrera claims. http://sport.setanta.com/en/Sport/News/Foo...n-Riera-future/

http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11669_3860987,00.html Liverpool winger Sebastian Leto has confirmed he is close to agreeing a loan move to Olympiakos. Reds boss Rafa Benitez has informed Leto he is willing to loan him out as he is well down the pecking order at Anfield. Leto's stay at Liverpool has been placed in doubt because of a passport fiasco. The Argentine currently holds an Italian passport to enable him to win a work permit, but Italian authorities are thought to be carrying out an investigation on the validity of a number of citizenship decisions. The 21-year-old has revealed he has spoken to Olympiakos manager Ernesto Valverde and he admits he would be interested in a move to Greece. "I spoke with the people of the club [Liverpool] and our decision is to leave the club and to play somewhere else on loan for one season," Leto told Greek daily SportDay. "I have to play football next season. "My agents are in Athens. They speak with Olympiakos for my loan. "Their manager, Ernesto Valverde called me. He told me that he is really interested in having me at his team. He told me about his thoughts and everything. For me its really important to have a manager who speaks my language. "I spoke with some friends who know everything about Olympiakos and they told me that this is the biggest club in Greece, that they always win the championship and they always play Champions League football. "I heard a lot also about the fans of Olympiakos. I know also that Galletti, Ledesma and Belluschi are players of Olympiakos and they are really good, they are players of national team level. "I have some offers from Italy and Spain but Olympiakos is the best club for me at the moment." Leto has been assured he has a long-term future at Liverpool by Benitez and he is just hoping to have his passport problems resolved so that he can move to Greece. He added: "I am still waiting for the community passport. Liverpool will wait for it until 31st of July. "Of course, my dream is to play football here in Liverpool. "I spoke with Rafa Benitez and he told me that he wants me but I can't stay without the passport. "He advised me to go somewhere else to play for one season and to return next summer. He is right."

Robbie Keane would add new dimension – Dirk Kuyt Jul 23 2008 by Tony Barrett, Liverpool Echo DIRK KUYT today revealed he believes Robbie Keane could add a new dimension to Liverpool's attack. Keane's proposed move to the Reds from Spurs is edging ever closer and Kuyt is hoping a deal for the Irish international can be completed sooner rather than later – even though he knows his arrival would only add to competition for places at Anfield. Kuyt, a second half substitute in last night's 0-0 draw against Hertha Berlin in Liverpool's latest pre-season friendly, said: "Keane has played for many years in the Premier League and he has done really well with Spurs and is a massive player for them. "We all know how well he did for Spurs last season and if he could do the same for us if he came here he would be a great signing. "When you are at a club like Liverpool you expect the club to be linked with top players and of course you want players like Keane because they can come in and do a good job. "It would make competition for places even tougher, but that's the way it should be because it brings out the best in you. "We are always looking at the papers to try and find out what is going on and we expect a few more signings but I suppose we'll just have to wait and see." Kuyt only came on after 74 minutes of last night's game as he bids to return to full fitness ahead of the new season. Having been away with Holland at Euro 2008 and missing the start of pre-season training, he is now playing catch-up on the rest of his team mates who returned to Melwood a fortnight earlier than him. But the Dutch international believes he is slowly but surely getting back to full fitness and is hopeful of being ready to start Liverpool's next warm-up match against Villarreal in Spain next Wednesday. "It's only my fifth day in training so I was only able to play a couple of minutes but it is going better and better," he said. "I probably still need a couple of hard sessions before I am able to play a full game but that's the way it is in pre-season. "We have had to work really hard and it was good to end a week of tough training sessions with a difficult match against Hertha Berlin. "I think we have all done pretty well, especially the young lads and the new players who have given really good performances on the training pitches and in games during the past week." http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/liverpool-f...00252-21389293/

Skysports.com can confirm West Brom have won the race to sign Liverpool goalkeeper Scott Carson. The Baggies have beaten off interest from a host of clubs to sign the England international. Liverpool decided to let Carson leave after bringing in Brazilian Diego Cavaleri as cover for No.1 Jose Reina. Stoke agreed a fee with Liverpool earlier this week and held talks with Carson only to pull out of the move on Thursday. West Brom also negotiated a fee with Liverpool for Carson and the former Leeds custodian has agreed a four-year deal at The Hawthorns. Carson's agent Colin Gordon has confirmed the deal has been done to bring Carson to West Brom. "The deal has been done," Gordon told skysports.com. "Scott has signed a four-year deal with West Brom. "They will pay £3.25million which will rise to £4million for Scott." http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11669_3834350,00.html

Robbie Keane is edging closer to a dream move to Anfield with Liverpool expected to submit an improved offer for the Tottenham striker within the next 48 hours. Rafa Benitez has shifted his focus from Gareth Barry to Keane following the collapse of Xabi Alonso's £15m move to Juventus. Liverpool failed with an offer of £5m plus Peter Crouch earlier this month for Keane, who Spurs rate at £20m. Sportsmail understands there is even a slight possibility that Keane could leave Tottenham's pre-season training camp early http://www.mailonsunday.co.uk/sport/footba...l.html?ITO=1490

http://www.goal.com/en/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=735992 Spain midfielder Xabi Alonso is pratically a Juventus player and all that is missing is his signature which will arrive early next week according to Corriere Dello Sport. Jean Claude Blanc met with Rafa Benitez on Friday and a deal was struck to bring the midfielder to the Stadio Olimpico. Benitez will meet Bianconeri officials again either on Monday or Tuesday where the contracts will be signed, sealed and delivered. The player's agent Inanki Ibanez will also be present at the meeting to ensure that all runs smoothly. Juve will be paying the Anfield Road club €17m which Liverpool will use to buy Aston Villa's Gareth Barry. Alonso has already reached an agreement with the Old Lady and he will sign a four year deal worth €3.5m per season as well as performance related bonuses. The Spain international who is currently involved in Euro 2008 will undergo a medical in Turin after the tournament. It's a big hit for the Bianconeri who have, once again, convinced major players to come on board as they prepare to challenge for major honours both domestically and in Europe next season. Bastian Scheweinsteiger's move from Bayern now looks highly unlikely after the capture of Alonso. The Bianconeri were on standby for the Bayern Munich midfielder in case the Alonso move fail

http://www.channel4.com/sport/football_italia/jun11l.html Roma boss Luciano Spalletti has faith in sporting director Daniele Pradè to succeed in the transfer market and hopes he can lure John Arne Riise. The Giallorossi are looking to strengthen after narrowly missing out on the Scudetto last term and are already close to negotiating full ownership of striker Mirko Vucinic. Spalletti is hoping that the capital club will succeed in the market and has set his heart on Liverpool’s Norwegian star Riise. “A play like Riise can give a different kind of readiness,” the Lupi tactician said on the Roma Channel. “Considering the challenges that await us in the coming season, Riise has the qualities that we are looking for.“However, we have to look for other players as well and not make any mistakes in forming the new squad, such as losing the balance of the side. “It is fundamental that we have a group based on the right attitude of friendship and professionalism. “Pradè will do the majority of the work in the market and I am confident that he will do well, following our strategy. “All we need is to add a little extra quality to our ranks so that we can compete in all competitions again,” he concluded.

http://www.goal.com/en/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=732170 Juventus Enhance Alonso Offer Juventus have increased their bid for Liverpool’s Xabi Alonso as they attempt to lure the midfielder to Turin. The Bianconeri are keen on the Spanish international and recently Giovanni Cobolli Gigli confirmed the club are in on-going talks with the Reds for the midfielder. However, so far talks have hit a brick wall as Liverpool are not willing to budge on the £15m price tag. According to reports in Italy, Juve only wanted to offer half of what Liverpool were asking for but now it seems as if the Old Lady has upped the ante as she attempts to prize Alonso away from Anfield. Stadio News 24 claims the Old Lady has offered Liverpool €18m (£14.2m) which is still slightly off the £15m that the Reds are asking for. However, it is likely that the Merseysiders will accept this latest offer as the Bianconeri are not looking to move any further up on their latest bid. Claudio Ranieri is a big admirer of the Spanish player and he will be hoping to add him to his midfield department to partner Momo Sissoko. Juve have returned to the Champions League and they are currently building a side for the future capable of challenging for major honours. The Old Lady believes it would be a shame if Juve lose out on Alonso having come so close this time and she is trying her best to capture the player before other clubs beging swooping

http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/nufc/newcas...72703-21038508/ NEWCASTLE United are furious with Liverpool after they offered three “nonentities” in part-exchange for winger James Milner. United have found themselves in an identical situation to Aston Villa when Martin O'Neill went ballistic after Rafael Benitez tried the same trick with them in a bid to lure Gareth Barry to Anfield. O'Neill never went public with the players he was offered by Liverpool, but the Chronicle can reveal that Benitez has dangled 19-year-old defenders Emiliano Insua and Jack Hobbs in front of United. The third player was so insignificant that my St James’s Park source could not even recall his name – and needless to say United will not be biting. Insua is an Argentinian who was signed from Nobby Solano’s old club Boca Juniors, while Hobbs has been on loan at Sc***horpe since the January transfer window. It’s not that long ago that Liverpool were trailing in the wake of a Sir Bobby Robson-inspired United, and the feeling at St James’s Park is that the Anfield club have a nerve to offer three players who are presumably surplus to requirements for Milner. If Benitez had put Peter Crouch in the frame in part-exchange for their England Under-21 international, then United would at least have been prepared to listen. Even Norwegian left-back John Arne Riise, whose Liverpool stock has slumped since his disastrous own goal against Chelsea in the semi-final of the Champions League at Anfield, would have brought a semblance of interest. Riise is expected to leave Merseyside in the next month and it seemed a fair bet that Kevin Keegan could have been interested. Keegan told me before the end of the season that with Spaniard Jose Enrique as his only left-back, he would be on the lookout for another one in the summer. But that was before Keegan’s showdown meeting with Mike Ashley. Indeed, all the talk among football agents is that if any transfer business is to be done with United, it will be done through director of football Dennis Wise and vice-president (player recruitment) Tony Jimenez and not the manager. Oliver is full of crap even most barcodes cant stand him. I do not believe a word of this!
