I think that the crux of this Alonso business is that Rafa is really aiming to win the Premiership title and sees Xabi as a 'weak link' or someone who hasn't delivered (or developed his game to suit the tempo of English football) the way he had hoped.

Lauri Dalla Valle has done well according to reports in his hometown paper. However, the source for the info has mainly been his father, so it must be taken with a pinch of salt. The last match the U-16s played this spring was against a trialist team (that's what was reported) and played at Anfield. Lauri scored the only goal of the game. As for him being Swiss, maybe the fact that he has a Finnish mother and an Italian father gives him that 'compromise nationality'?

Smicer was also the object of these continuous 'jokes' about his physical condition and fitness that popped up everywhere. Extremely tedious, a bit like this Voronin slagfeast and very unfair to Vlad. But there always seems to be a player or teo who get slaughtered. Kewell, Cisse, Diouf... There are endless comparisons to Sean Dundee, Torben Piechnik or Istvan Kozma by people who (I very much doubt) never saw them play. And only Diouf really deserves all the contempt he gets. Erik Meijer, on the other hand, never scored a goal, yet he's a hero because he ran around a lot and chased the ball like a dog.

I don't mind Voronin being slagged off in a thread like this that is designated for the said purpose, but it's very tiresome to read digs about his ineptitude in almost every other thread.
