My theory is that Klopp went after A-list targets and the effect of no CL football has hit him hard. He'd rather not spend than spend for the sake of spending. Why commit to a 5 year deal to a player you don't really fancy? I don't for one second believe we're not spending because we are tight. The Wijnaldum deal for me is the "we could have used the money elsewhere" transfer of the window, so I don't think FSG aren't willing to spend.

Need cohesion in the team, I'd play the best side possible.

Not entirely sure how true this is, but apparently the club have failed the EPPP (Elite Player Performance Plan) audit but we were saved by the Premier League who intervened. A number of coaches have left, and the club was found wanting in terms of overall kids' education. Other rumours of negligence and odd goings on at the Academy. So not surprised there's talk of a merger (Melwood/Academy).

Caulker was a short loan so he's returned to QPR (who loaned him to Southampton!) Ilori's on his way out I think, no chance he's staying. Kolo's not had his contract renewed. If Sakho stays, we don't get a new CB (Sakho, Lovren, Matip, Gomez....and Lucas....)
