I think the struggle may be different. If someone does something racist which reveals them to be racist then this becomes their defining characteristic in a lot of people's eyes. It's obviously not though. That person may be a nice guy or girlin other aspects. However because they are now viewed exclusively as a vile racist, thse who know them seek to defend them and that is where some of the more weird defences come from.
