The Assualt on the PL

It got me wondering coz we need to be playing more attackminded if we are going to win the PL. His Valencia was a finetuned machine that could take any team in Spain but I just feel that the PL is different and that you need to play more attacking football to gain points in some games. Does he know what needs to be done and will he go away from some of his defensive game? I think and hope that he will, what do you think? After all, he is saying we need to spend big and spend now, but we don't know what his plan is.

By the way, he really impresses me in that way that he never hangs on to players who are not up to it just to prove he was right, like he's just shown with Gonzalez. That is what we need and this is one ofmany things that is a big difference to our previous manager. YNWA

Well, I'd suggest you let him know what it takes to win the PL by writing to him or phoning in to a talk show.

And it's a disgrace he hasn't told us what his plans are in the transfer market.

Chelsea managed alright by playing dreary defensive football so I have to disagree. Besides I don't think its a case of playing a more attack minded game but more to do with the lack of quality attack minded players, which will hopefully be sorted in the summer.

Wtf is that for? I just posted my thoughts on a LFC forum, no need for that att all. I am totally behind Rafa, just wondering about what others might think. But by all means, lock the the thread if it's so upsetting.

Rafa has what it takes he just doesn't have the players - last night showed that

this summer is as important to Rafa as 2002 was to Ged - however unlike 2002 I'm sure Rafa will be going after the right players

I just hope he's able to get all his #1 choices

If we took the chances that we create then people would say we were an attacking team, we just cannot finish.

Sure, but there are other equally valid explanations 1) the chances we create are not good enough, 2) there are not enough chances created

I would say the answer is somewhere between 1 and what you said - poor finishing and not enough good chances leading us to need to do number 2 ;)

Upsetting? It's amusing.

Carry on.

Why is it that I think that you only have that attitude on the internet?

We have two clear cut chances from Pennant & Gerrard but failed to score. Milan has one fluke goal and score another goal from their only another clear cut chance in the whole game that was very similar to Gerrard one. See the difference?

I don't think Rafa's up to it. Sack him.

Bring in that Atkinson fella. He nearly won the league with s***ty Villa, he'll take us to the next level.

We have seen how Rafa takes to European style games like duck to water. Yet mystifyingly he seems a bit lost in the PL.

Speculative reasons have been given at best such as :

a) He hasn't got the rite players to play his Valencia styled approach. That is the single striker formation where the misflders chip in with the majority oif the goals. Indeed time and again, our present midfld have shown that they are not to be depended for contibuting to the goals for with great relaibility. Given that the bosses have instructed rafa to goforit in the transfer mkt there should be nomore excuses for the failure of the midfld to contribute.

b) He has not got the attacking noose to prise open well organised defence. Rafas shown hes cert got the nouse to stifle great attacking sides eg Barca and Milan. However, hes open to query as to his ability to effectively strategise attacks and the use of strikers. Cases in point : Kyut in withdrwn role, not using Crouch in games such as the CL final . Does he see a striker as a striker or hes stubbornly adamant on his Valencia approach where some1 wrote that actually Mistas was a converted miflder!

i have seen so many written comments on our shortfall that you could compile a book on that alone! However, its gonna be his 4th year here. Its goona IMO be his defining year on whether he cuts it or not in the PL, at least.

Let 2007-08 come quickly ans see what Rafas made of.

I personally don't think Rafa is stubborn and I think he is a manager that learns very quickly and is always willing to change things when required. I mean, I think a lot of people would have given Gonzalez another season but clearly he is not afraid to let players go that he himself signed. ANd what about Bellamy!

I have complete faith in his approach. Rafa is the best man for the job and he will be successful in the Premiership, IMO.

Thanks Sheida.

i do think hes the best man for the job. Howevre, hes yet to convince me that his style is suited for the PL.

Hes also tinkered with 2nd tiered players and also quickly gotten rid of! Next season we will be having more of this in Leto, et al. i am excited that he has mentioned some top tier players.

Cant wait for the next season.

My take is this: If the bosses support him with the dosh for the players, he has to show his mettle esp in the PL IMO.

i am not saying he has to win the PL. But given that he will receive the financial support and therefore he has to be expected to show his nouse, dont you?

First of all, it isn't 'noose'; it's nous. This is a noose:

Secondly, that is one of the most flawed points that journalists and pundits alike continue to churn out.

He most certainly does have the attacking 'noose', as our points tally over the past three years at home points out - we play the same teams at home and away, yet we struggle against them away, where you'd expect the aforementioned teams to be more willing to attack than at Anfield, where they often come and park a bus in front of our goal.

Yet, we can win at home and not away.

Basically, Rafa needs to sort out our mentality when we go away from home in the Premier League, and worry less about the opposition. We need to be able to start games off gung ho and finish most games in the first hour, but to do this we need players with 'pace and power' - Gerrard is currently the only player we have who has both, and as it is we have very few 'fast' players to start with, or players who are capable of running fair distances with the ball at a very quick speed - that is, we lack the ability to counter attack.

As I said earlier, when we're away from home, teams are more likely to attack us than at Anfield. When they do, we are unable to break quickly, ala Man Utd, Arsenal (a couple of years ago) or Chelsea, as we lack the players with the correct attributes to be able to do this.

Having said all that however, I do reckon our players currently are still capable of winning the Premiership - case in point being Kuyt's strike that hit the bar vs Chelsea, which was the turning point ~ it's not as if we don't create chances at all either, we need to be able to put them away too.

I look forward to the new signings and seeing how Benitez adapts his approach this time around and with which players - should make for an interesting summer and next season.

Roll on 07-08!

Rafa now has a strong squad, needs 2-3 world class players who are ready now....and we will challenge.

Simple as that, any chance i can become manager?

Thanks deathscar for both reply and english lesson... :)

Good points. However, i would add that our midflders are not akin to scoring goals eg Pennant, Xabi, Momo, Masch, Zenden, Gonzo

In fact neither are our strikers sharp shooters except maybe for Crouch which is all the more mysterious that he did not start the CL game earlier.

Point is : is it mentality or Rafas tactics away plus crop of midflrs which curtails the flow of away goals?

Some 1 pointed out that we are the team with most shots at goal and yet the conversion is only 1 in 10 which is the 13th poorest in the PL!
